I think there was a lot of ways they could have made this work out really well. As I think you were alluding to, possibly "damaging" the face so that there is enough resemblance for us to understand what it was originally vs the state it was in when we see it.

But unfortunately, I think they wanted to make sure that _everyone_ understood the call back.

Which kind of really describes the whole movie: playing it safe. There were no risks taken, nothing implied or left to the imagination. Nothing new was introduced; they just took bits and pieces from every other Alien film and put them together.
