Gonna need that follow up video before you retire.

Where is the rest. It was just getting interesting

RAID combines multiple drives to form an array, depending on the level of the RAID you get different options for your drives, however there are limitations to using standard RAID and using a RAID card. A RAID card processed the information going to the drives (it's dedicated), meaning RAID arrays get better performance, and allow you to do more complex RAID arrays without necessarily loosing performance. RAID cards get placed on a PCI slot on you motherboard.

That's also not mentioning, the smaller form factors mean smaller cases, means components closer together on the MB, means less space, less cooling room, less cooling options, and in general all of the components can suffer because of that.

Budget boards aren't bad in and of them selves, but they end up with budget parts... and there is a greater chance something is going to backfire and cause damage.

The vast majority of U.S. speakers do say "again" as "agen", however, which is the more logical comparison to "against". (The exception are Southerners who pronounce it "uh-gin".)

no update ever published....however he noted in a later dated video, with this identical Adaptec card and 8 OCZ SSD drives, there was a scalable incremental improvement with each hard drive added to the RAID 0 array. However, using a Motherboard RAID solution, performance improvements topped off at 2 hard drives which above that added storage without speed improvements.

Seagate Drives are usually middle performance with a mixture of price-performance Red Drives are for NAS and Black drives fast and more expensive

X} RAID is in basic. "Multiple Hard drives paired together in certain methods *the Number of raid* to act as one logical drive/partition for increased benefit. (Speed and/or Redundancy)" Caching is just a method of speeding up commonly used data or files access to improve performance.

doing it the proper way. /dev/shm isn't the fastest way, but it does not affect boot up time. Unless you're copying files over on boot time, which it seems like the asus application is.

Run a simple memory bench, now you'll see the performance of your RAM. Take out a few percent for overhead, and you'll see a RAMdisk is fully capable of reaching those speeds. It's how you implement it, that determines the speed of it.

Where is the followup video? I've wanted to do this myself. But there are no benchmarks out there for raid 0 arrays with SSD cache... Cmon Linux!

Actually right now if you are doing a RAID you want to use the latest Seagate drives due to the firmware issues the latest Western Digital drives have been having when used in RAID. Many people have been reporting issues with the WD drives dropping out of the the RAID regularly even though they are advertising "RAID aware." So far the latest Seagate drives seem to work well in RAID so Seagate has definitely fixed their firmware issues plaguing previous generation drives.

actually, they can tax the PSU more then higher end MBs, easily. There is a reason they are 'Budget' boards, outside of missing features from the higher end models. Some of those features and designs make the PSU work less by allowing the MB to have some method of managing the powersupply going through the board, . *which means the MB last longer, and the PSU isn't geting backlash from the MB if it browns or dims for a second.

SSD is very good for RANDOM non sequential reads and writes not to say that it's not good at that just that reading and writing to a HDD means it has to find the point on the disk to write to (seek times). With the SSD takes those fractions of a second quicker if it already has the info on the SSD before asking the disks for the file. Means that the disks can take some time writing the information so you don't get an IO bottle neck.

Sounds about right.. Hope he figures it out.

It sucks to keep losin parts.

It's storing the commonly used files of each program I believe. Since they can be accessed faster on an SSD but SSD's aren't that large yet, they're used as a cache so each programs most commonly used files can go on it.

Nice setup! My only concern would be getting that honking rackmount off the carpet ;) cheers and have fun testing!

No, the requirements for a RAID 0 stripe is just that you have 2 or more drives (any drives, different capacities or cache sizes work too) and a RAID capable motherboard or a RAID controller although most modern motherboards have a built in RAID controller.
