“The aircraft taking part in the 2017 Abingdon Air and Country Show, suffered of an emergency landing accident at Abingdon Airfield. Engine mechanical issues to be confirmed. However, one eyewitness report states "the propeller was stationary" and that the pilot "...tried desperately to get some airspeed before he pulled up but momentum carried him down, it could have been a lot lot worse, his quick reaction and decision saved him". The pilot "...was almost at the [Runway]18 threshold end heading north. In front of him was the airfield boundary, after he pitched up for a half Cuban. It's difficult to say if he would have cleared the fence and hedge but he would have a higher ground speed which could have made things even worse"

The GLIDER Debrief™
A good pilot is always learning. A great pilot uses systems to ensure they are performing at their safest and best. The debrief is a wonderful way to help guide the post-flight conversation with yourself, your copilot, your student, or your instructor. Using the GLIDER™ acronym, pilots of gliders (and other craft) can follow the chronological process of flight and dive deeper into areas of proficiency and others that may need more focus.

That hurt my spine just watching that.

Never buy a plane that has the word Jinx in the tail letters...

He’s going to have to see the chiropractor for a few months, but he’s alive.

Never Turn when low and slow, just pitch down and look for something soft!

1. Not an RC plane
2. Engine sounds you hear are his flying partner continuing the routine
3. He survived his name is Chris Burkett

Lots of critics. You can see in the video the tree line that was in his direction of travel and to his right. More than likely the spectators, etc were to the left. Going straight wasn't an option. A 90 degree turn left apparently wasn't either.

So if he had options then he could have made better decisions. My belief is he didn't have better options and being forced into a low altitude 180 and surviving the result is an amazing job. He also never lost the aircraft he just did not have the altitude for anything better. I think it was a remarkable job. Plenty of pilots have turned far less emergencies into funerals.

It looked like it was stalled, which caused the right wing to dip and go low. If you look closely while it is in the steep turn to the right, the left wing aileron is up, which would normally make it turn left. That suggests it was fully stalled and ready to spiral in. The pilot did a good job at that altitude of partially breaking the stall and getting the wings level. He then pulled up just enough to not hit nose first, which saved him.

This plane made by high quality materials.... it's not broken to pieces even crashed hard like that....

Summary is pilot was knocked unconscious and seriously injured. Engine had a series of problems following airborne prop strike couple of years earlier. Engine was starved of oil and piston no.3 grabbed the cylinder. It had cracking previously and year before owner was advised to replace pistons.

Probably more worried about keeping well away from anyone and got overwhelmed. Understandably so. Hope he recovers.

That's quite a pilot. I hope he has no permanent injuries.

He did great .
Hope he recover soon 🙏

That is 100% pilot error. Pilot had plenty of airspeed to maneuver to a controlled landing.

His back prolly broken tho. At least he didn't burn

May 14th 2017 FAA report two identical planes performing acrobatic maneuvers at air show when according to EVR plane started losing oil and pressure about 5 minutes before the crash, the low oil pressure indication was it's not noted by the pilot who was seriously injured but did not state what the injuries were. Cockpit capsule was made of Kevlar and there were crash absorbing seat cushions and no protrusions in the cockpit otherwise pilot probably would not have survived. The aircraft has sustained one propeller strike and a few other engine issues involving Pistons or heads, the maintenance was performed by the owner not the pilot.

What plane is that? It has a nice spitfire look to it.

It’s so deceiving. You’re thinking “ok, he’s got time to turn and land” and then ground come into focus QUICK.

Whoa whoa wait a minute, his call sign is JINX? Oh that’s gold.

=AAIB Conclusion=
The engine operated normally until part way through the flying display when it seized due to a lack of lubrication and cooling. The available low oil pressure indications were not sufficient to alert the pilot before the engine seized. The subsequent forced landing resulted in impact sufficient to cause damage to the aircraft and serious injury to the pilot. Emergency responders were delayed by the absence of instructions, visible from outside the cockpit, explaining how the canopy could be opened. However, energy absorbing cushions and the safety cell construction of the cockpit contributed to the pilot’s survival

Low level engine failure with a 180 degree turn. He did a good job and walked away
