Have heard (and felt) that sound - including the engine winding back. My father was a C5 jet engine mechanic for 20 years. He taught us not to panic - as long as it has 3 or more engines. He also said sit in the back. If an engine is on fire, don't panic - point it out to a flight attendant; the pilot will exterminate the fire or shutdown that engine. If the fire continues or spreads, pray you've got a former military pilot - they work better under pressure - infact, they thrive. He did not lie.

As an airline pilot, I gotta give props to the engineering homies as well! Everytime I do my preflight walk around, I’m always in awe of the crazy engineering of these behemoths. They’re designed with a lot of redundancy for everyone’s safety.

The reliability of jet engines is absolutely amazing, you can almost assume they won't fail. Some pilots go their entire career with zero real-life engine failures. We are very fortunate that we discovered engines with absolutely mind blowing reliability.

The only thing worse is hearing a similar sound in a single engine plane. My dad did on take off in a Cessna. Hung valve and emergency landing.
