CATASTROPHIC ENGINE FAILURE - Raw footage - landing in a corn field.

After departing on a routine flight from Williamsburg-Jamestown Airport (KJGG) on May 26th to Connecticut, Professional seaplane pilot, Antony Yen of "Straight and Level Seaplanes" was expecting a smooth flight. That was not to be, as within ten minutes after take off, the experimental light sport flying boat suffered catastrophic engine failure at only 600 feet above the ground. With dense trees all around, and only 40 seconds away from death, Mr. Yen immediately located the only potential field in gliding distance where he and his student were committing to landing.

Just 40 seconds after the engine quit producing power, Mr Yen and his student were safely on the ground with no injuries to persons or property.

When asked about the landing Mr. Yen stated “I spend a lot of time training my students for engine failures, and more importantly training them to always have a field in mind in case you lose an engine. As the landing goes it wasn’t my smoothest landing, but given the conditions it's good enough for me”. FAA inspectors later confirmed the loss of fuel pressure was due to a cracked fuel rail and the incident was not due to pilot error.

Mr Yen is an experienced seaplane pilot and flight instructor with Straight and Level Seaplanes and hails from Eustis Florida where he trains students.

Wait… you don’t just open the door and jump out with your parachute and GoPro selfie stick in hand as soon as the engine stops?

Great flying. A great piece of advice that I've heard from a flight instructor: "From the moment the engine quits, the plane is owned by the insurance company". It does not matter if you damage the aircraft or not the main goal is to get on the ground safely. Very well executed.

The birds chirping at the end with the two guys walking away with no injuries was the best part.

Immediate response, keep the airspeed and pick the best spot. Bravo!

RIP to the instructor here. He unfortunately had another engine failure a few months after this one and passed away in the crash.

Rest in peace Antony. "October 17, 2022, a single-engine Aero Adventure Aventura II plane crash near North Perry Airport in Pembroke Pines, Florida killed 34-year-old flight instructor Antony Rolland Yen and 32-year-old student pilot Jordan Hall."

Excellent work. The foresight required to have matching t-shirts and shorts for such an eventuality cannot be overstated.

Very good. Given the time to react. Good support and trust from the second pilot too… got to just let go and leave it to the PiC. He’s qualified and got it… well done, very glad you’re both safe. 🙏🏻

Thankfully you had that nice open field nearby when that engine crapped out. But nice work, not losing your faculties in that situation. You stayed with it and aviated. Great job!

Wonderfully solved, congrats! As one of my first instructors said, a good landing is the one you can walk away from, and it’s excellent if the plane can fly again.

Nice job with the emergency landing! Am I the only one who was curious if the guy in the right seat had those wet shorts prior to the emergency, 😆?

I was in a plane when the engine sputtered once. The pucker factor is astounding! Good job keeping cool.

Amazing calm reactions to walk away safely. That tree looked very ominous as they were coming in to land.

You did a fine job..resisting pulling back takes thought. No stall spin...perfect. you did EXACTLY what Bob Hoover said to do...." find the softest spot you can and fly the s.o.b. all the way to the crash site.

Great job, be careful fighting over the yoke in the beginning. Time is valuable there
