After the opening lyrical passage between Marie and Tony, the real intro to the song begins, leading into "Tonight, tonight, won't be just any night/Tonight there will be no morning star." This orchestral lead-in to the actual song is among the most beautiful and "lifting" intros in musical theatre. There is an accelerando here that must be honored so that this intro can soar into the song itself. In the original movie version, the tempo change is palpable, as it is here in this clip. However, as much as I loved the Spielberg re-imagining of this musical, Spielberg misses the mark on the lead-in to this song. He pulls it back, and this is unfortunate. As I said above, this intro must soar and lift us all into the realization that "tonight is like no other night" for these two star-crossed lovers.
