In many ways, the Spanish Civil War was a prelude to World War II. The country was on a crossroads towards either communism or fascism. When a leftist government was elected to office, some high-ranking military officers conspired to overthrow the government.

This is how the Spanish Civil War started, unfolded, and ended, with hindsight.

A really confusing civil war to put it mildly

Franco was not a military prodigy. He was probably above the average, but still part of the military in africa, which was notorious for bloating the amount of medals/condecorations and promotions, even compared with the rest of the army in Spain. It was also the section of the army most plagued by tradition and nepotism, and thus one of the most ineficient militaries in Europe, which had maaany battlefield dissasters against much worse prepared armies.

So it is quite normal to get the youngest general in europe since napoleon in that time. He was probably just your average good general in any other context. In fact, he was notorious mainly for being strict, not a drunk and not to frequent brothels, which made him already stand out.

Appart from this biased video, the republic government was progresista but not Marxist at all, unfortunately, the liberal democracies at that time turn his back to the legal and elected government and then he only found the help of the stalinist URSS, meanwhile Franco and all the rebels military got the help of the Nazi Hitler and Fascist Mussolini. The war in Spain ended on April 39 the Second World War started on September same year, just for a few months the republic government didn't get the help of the alliees, who will fight back again the fascism.
