Reading my Haynes Bf109 manual as we speak.
Inertia Starter: after winding for 20 seconds the required speed of approximately 18, 000 rpm is reached.this high rpm is then reduced by planet gears and transmitted to the starter dog via a clutch housing. The pilot can then start the aircraft by pulling the start Handel In The cockpit which throws the stater dog into the back of the crank shaft, thus turning the engine over until it fires.
