Previously I've compared AMD's flagship Ryzen CPUs against each other. Today I'm putting yet another 3 generations of Ryzen 9 CPUs up against each other.
This time around it's -- 7900X vs 5900X vs 3900X. Is it even worth it to upgrade?

Many thanks go out to #Georgios over at #quippr for getting a hold on these CPUs for my review. #NotSponsored 🤗🤩
Are you happy with where we're heading with these CPUs? 😅

I love my 3900X. It has served me extremely reliable for more than 3.5 years, when I first built the system. It's paired up with 64GB of RAM, and blazes through everything.

I love my 5900X... I'll upgrade when it begs me to. For now, it smashes anything I throw at it.

Looks like ill be holding my 5900x. Zen 4 doesnt seem worth with my current position. Probably better to see what zen 5 can offer. Hopefully am5 socket will start to mature.

5900X all the way...
Very lower power consumption
20+% improvement in gaming
inexpensive motherboard and RAM compatibility
The 7900X is a full platform overhaul with an expensive price tag and expensive to operate with insane wattage draw all for 15% gaming improvements

damn, a nicely done review! thanks buddy. first time seeing your vid, but defo subbing. keep it up!

as for 3900x. got it on a day of release and was INLOVE (quite possibly, mostly because it replaced my heavy OC'd 3570k). but after almost 3 years of using it... i still love it. yes, it is a lot slower than next gen 900's but.. for my usage, this thing still performs beautifully! do not feel the need or even a simple wish to upgrade. at this rate, i feel like i can happily run this bugger for another 1-2 years without considering an upgrade.

Sorry bud, but your numbers seem to be way off what 5900x can do without too much work. To compare apples to apples, first thing we need to do is feed both of them the same power.

My 5900x at 200watts (to normalize the power consumption with 7900x), with decent C16 ram at 3800MHz is hitting over:
-154FPS vs 93FPS (shown by you) average AC:Valhalla with 1080p Ultra high
-155FPS vs 143FPS (shown by you) average BL3 1080p Ultra DX11
-176FPS vs 99FPS (shown by you) average CP2077 1080p Ultra
-226FPS vs 195FPS (shown by you) average SOTR 1080p Highest
-200FPS vs 165FPS (shown by you) average HZD 1080p Ultimate Quality

All of this was with built-in benchmarks, 100% resolution scaling, no adaptive fps, no fps locks, no DLSS, no FSR, no nothing... And on Aircooling with D15S!!!

I think we need to get better at power normalized testing before we tell everyone to throw 5900X chips into the bin.

All my results are either in spitting distance of 7900x, or better than it.

EDIT: Added HZD result.

I'm curious how well the 7900X performs at the same power draw as the 3900X and 5900X

How could you have "made sure the RAM capacity didn't affect the test results"? It's already been shown that 32GB RAM in quad rank has a massive impact on 1% lows for Ryzen 5000.

In 2023 about to build 3900x a 4k editing pc using premiere pro

My current system is based around a Ryzen 5 2600x and it's served me very well. The 5900x is looking especially attractive to me now, they can be bought used for around the £220 mark, and would drop straight into my existing motherboard with only a BIOS update and a switch over to an AIO cooler required. For that I get a two generational jump and a doubling of my core count. This is why AMD has always been such an attractive option for me... 🙌🏾

I ran my 3900X for 5 years of transcoding before I noticed a slowdown. That led to receiving a 5900X for Father's Day. I now enjoy greater speed and over 15 degrees lower operating temps with an Artic 34 Duo Sport air cooler with a Silverstone 120mm Sharkas the front fan.

This is the best video I have seen so far, motivated to do with your script in my language for people in my state. ❤ Just confidence is not enough 😢

Awesome comparison, that would be perfect with the inclusion of the new Ryzen 9 7900 X-less model at 65W. Minimal performance difference with immense power savings.

Great video!!! Were do you get your background music from?

Zen 3 is AMD's Sandy Bridge moment. Before Alder Lake, it was the biggest IPC i ever watched in 5/6 years, that's why the perfomance per watt of the 5900X is better than Zen 4.

Well that answers my question. Keep my 3900x, get the 7900 XTX, then when Windows 10 dies in 2025, get the best AMD Processor at the time and move to AM5. Bye 5700XT, it's been great!

I am debating on buying a 7900xtx for my 3900xt system I think it’ll be great for 4K

great video. I wouldn't be too disappointed with the power draw on the 7900x, its boosting higher and therefore needs more voltage to achieve this. It uses way less than most i7 and i9 chips

I'm upgrading from Ryzen 5 3600x to Ryzen 9 5900x What performance increase should I expect with an RTX 2080ti?
