I have learned a lot about Medicaid this year in—oddly enough—Missouri, with helping my mom. There is Medicaid—for low income seniors, then there is Medicaid specifically regarding long term care. All people 65+ in MO, can apply for the LTC Medicaid one—-they may be placed on “spend down” status—meaning, they have money/assets, and they would have to spend down to the limits allowed before medicaid would cover the long term care cost. It is really kind of a pain applying for it, which is likely why many don’t apply. We started the process while my mom was in the hospital which made it so much easier, they have patient advocate people that take care of most of it.
The low income medicaid—my mom is labeled “very low” income, is really an amazing help! I have so much less worry about it all now. And she did work and pay into it most of her life, she was just a low-income earner. (think cashiers, waitresses, housekeepers, etc)
