Very well explained. As an engineer, I totally agree on the fact that the force required to break the steel cap (not crush) would not be achieved through bike crashes. 2500 pounds of force wouldn’t be attained through it.

I’ve been looking for motorcycle “boots” and given the ridiculous prices (or crazy track focussed looks) I’m also going for safety boots.
Proper soles, full grain leather, some padding on the ankles, and then toe caps (steel or other solid materials) & in my mind you’ve pretty much got the same coverage as “bike boots”.

Spot on. I was unfortunate enough to come off my Yamaha FZ1N at 120km/h sliding down the highway and the steel capped boots performed pretty good. If it wasn't for the instant disintegration of the shoe laces on my right boot I would say they were perfect. The boots took a lots of pounding. I did end up with a sore ankle but nothing serious. My upper body was a different story. Three broken ribs. If it wasn't for the Dainese leather jacket things could be much worse. Year later, I still use the same pair of my Hard Yakka 3056 work boots for commuting and work. With new shoe laces 😊

Your study is great, i have been using safety boot, it not only keeps safe your foot but also helps in griping the loose floor . It’s a great idea and it works. 👍

I'm a new rider and was wondering if I really needed to get motorcycle boots, or if I could just wear my Steeltoes so thanks for the great video!

When I joined the navy they stated the reason we wear steel toed boots was, if the toe box is crushed it does amputate the toes because it’s easier to reattach an amputation than fix crushed toes. I bought riding boots and I hat them. The toe box is larger than my work boots and it makes it hard to ride cause the boot gets hung up on the shift lever and brake lever.

You're right! To have an accident with working boots and have that kind of amputation, it requires for that accident to be as forceful as well as to come at the angle where the steel toe would be at its weakest point to crush the steel, whereas having just normal boots with a soft toe, there are more way to have a bad injury in an accident because wherever it hits, it will crush.
I guess my only concern now would be if I can get underneath the gear change to make changes without difficulties. I ride a Sportster...

Steel toes are great. Yeah if they crush they cut your toes off, but the same or worse would happen if you didn't have steel toes. FIY there's lots of Motorcycle boots that have steel toes as well. So lets ignore that part and look at the other differences.

Only arguments against work boots for me are.
That Motorcycle "BOOTS" typically have the ankle armor, most work boots, and motorcycle "shoes" do not.
Also the construction, yes work boots are tough but most are not designed for being flung and shredded down the highway. I've seen first hand how some of the toughest seeming work boots shred, come apart at the stitching, or more often lacing, sometimes with cheaper boots the sole gets ripped off.

Proper Motorcycle boots should be designed to not come apart in a high speed crash, as well as to protect the ankle from a crushing impact of the motorcycle. work boots are not designed for ether.

Yes cheap work boots from Walmart are better then sneakers or flip flops, No they are not as good as motorcycle boots, maybe around close to motorcycle shoes. If you can't afford proper motorcycle boots then work boots are better then nothing till you can. If you prefer work boots to motorcycle boots, I recommend, steel or compost toe, real stitched soles not the cheap glue on kind from Walmart, and the more padding and support around the ankle the better, of course thicker leather is better, some boots also have the leather guard around the shoelaces that's good to.

Keep in mind, this is coming from someone that off roads a metric cruiser wearing leather converse shoes. Everything you do in life has a risk, decide what your comfortable risking.

Carbon toe work boots won't stay crushed

All fair reasons. I got 3 bikes falling on my feet I was wearing safety dielectric boots, it’s plastic but they worked fine my toes are intact. It’s actually the laces that you don’t want to have. and no protection for the ankle or torsion.

They say that the steel cap would crush or penetrate your toes in a crash but I dont know about that. But yea motorcycle casual hi top trainers or boots say "reinforced toe box and heel" whatever that means, even if it goes right back to shape its probably gonna crush your toe anyway so why bother buying one. I'm trying to bend my safety hi top work boots both ways but I cant and thats good. Its all marketing bull crap I think.

Not under Any circumstances, They're Not designed for motorcycles and given prices of decent Safety boots they are No were near in comparison to proper motorcycle boots.
Yeah, maybe 20years ago but nowadays motorcycle boots are essentially for Safety and steel cap boots are dangerous operating your gear leaver brakes.
I've had both boots and steel cap safety boots are horrible to ride with and hey this just my opinion.
I have several motorcycle boots for the various touring, day trips and off road and they've lasted a lot longer than safety boots given you don't walk miles and miles but that's the difference in design and functionalities.
