Honestly this looks way better than the intended method, so much so I wish it was the legit way.
You could even have Charles give John a tomahawk at the start of the mission, so he gets a little revenge on Micah too

I like this because it implies the reason he stays alive a little longer and stumbles away is because the tomahawk gave him brain damage. Hell, he may not have even died from it; his nervous system just shit the bed and it took him a few days more to die from the cold and of hunger, unable to scream. Hehehehe.
