Seine Too Dirty For Athletes? Men’s Triathlon At Paris Olympics On Hold Due To River Water Quality

The Paris Olympics organisers have postponed the men's triathlon event, just days after cancelling the first training session for triathletes due to pollution in the River Seine. A Paris 2024 and World Triathlon statement said "a joint decision was taken to cancel the swimming part of the triathlon orientation." Tests results released on July 26 showed the water quality in the River Seine was slightly below the standards needed to authorise swimming. The Seine occupied centre stage at the Olympics opening ceremony as the athletes came down the river on boats. However, heavy rain during the opening ceremony revived concerns over whether the long-polluted river will be clean enough to host swimming competitions. Water quality is deeply linked with the weather in the French capital as untreated sewage can be washed into the river during rains. Watch the video to find out more.

This is the Olympics. The ultimate prize for athletes who have dedicated their entire lives for this moment and due to utter incompetence their sport may completely change. The people who had a part in the decision to use the Seine as the venue of this Olympic event should be sacked. Madness.

When I first visited Paris in 2009 while walking along the Seine to get to Notre Dame, I noticed a lot of homeless encampments along the banks. I was told then that the reason the encampments were placed there was so those encamped could use the Seine as their toilet. And I did see men urinating into the river. When I visited again in 2019 for a Seine River cruise, I noticed urinals and port-a-pottys had been installed all along the banks. I doubt the urinals drained into the sewer system. More likely they drained right into the river. As for the port-a-pottys, who knows where the city dumps and cleans them.
