The men's triathlon has been postponed because of poor water quality in the River Seine. Heavy rain at the opening ceremony means bacteria levels are too high. DW Sports correspondent Jonathan Crane explains why it's so difficult to keep the water clean.

So they’re just now figuring this out? The river has been polluted for years now, they should of had a back up plan. It takes years to organize the Olympics.

There is a reason why for 100 years it was not allowed to swim in the river.

They should take a page out of Joseph Bazalgette's methodology: When questioned why they should spend so much and design a sewer system with a capacity way over the estimated population trajectory, he said “Well, we’re only going to do this once.”.

The sewers he designed are still used over 100 years later. No short term solutions, no quick fixes.
