Port strike 2024: Massive inflation looms without deal | LiveNOW from FOX

A strike by dockworkers at 36 ports from Maine to Texas, the first in decades, could snarl supply chains and lead to shortages and higher prices if it stretches on for more than a few weeks. Jason Greer, Founder & President, Greer Consulting, Inc., joined LiveNOW from FOX to discuss.

The contract between the ports and about 45,000 members of the International Longshoremen’s Association expired at midnight, and even though progress was reported in talks on Monday, the workers went on strike. The strike affecting 36 ports is the first by the union since 1977.

Workers began picketing at the Port of Philadelphia shortly after midnight with signs that read “Fight automation, save jobs, ILA demands” and “Automation hurts families. ILA stands for job protections.”

The U.S. Maritime Alliance, which represents the ports, said Monday evening that both sides had moved off of their previous wage offers, but when picket lines went up just after midnight, it was apparent that no deal had been reached.

I feel investors should focus on under-the-radar stocks, considering the current rollercoaster nature of the stock market, Because 35% of my $270k portfolio comprises plummeting stocks that were once revered. I don't know where to go here out of devastation.

"You need bleach, that comes off ships"

Right. Because we don't manufacture jack in this country anymore. We've shipped all of our manufacturing overseas and then act surprised when something like this happens.

We can't make effing bleach? Seriously?

Fire all these greedy people! Robots don’t take sick days or only work two hours a day and bill for eight! Unions will be the death of business! Why do you think they make everything overseas now!? Companies don’t want to deal with this garbage

Roll in the robots and control modules and watch them move those containers without humans. This is equivalent to the steam locomotive engine team demanding more pay in a diesel/electric future. lol

They should try to live off of $1600 a month. I worked all my life and that's all I get in social security.

Couldn't we just use Mexico and Canada ports and just truck the stuff into US. Let these guys rot. They turned down a 50% increase.

I read their starting wage is $81, 000 and it goes to $200, 000. But they don't make enough money?

Covid exposed the weakness of our economy in that we off shored too many key industries. This strike is reinforcing the same weaknesses that haven’t changed under the current administration. These vulnerabilities need to be addressed. We need to be bring industries back to our soil and become less reliant on other countries and over sea shipping. I appreciate the highlight of automation and tech on these industries that I wasn’t aware of before.
