Abs for days. He told the marines that he has a good stash of roids in the jungle if they're interested. That's what he was hiding.

Crazy how Japanese people went from sacrificing themselves to kill enemies to being one of the most polite people in the world

For any wondering, that is a hand grenade with rubber bands strapped around the spoon, with the pin pulled, soaked in gasoline. The gasoline eats away at the rubbers integrity, causing it to crack and break down, eventually releasing the spoon and detonating. My grandpa talked about stopping new soldiers from walking out amongst the dead Japanese soldiers for a few hours. He said that they'd get new recruits to looks out into the combat zones, and after a few minutes, grenades would randomly start going off, sometimes for hours, depending on how many rubber bands they used, and where they put the gas. He also said that they'd often try to force them to shoot them, on purpose, rather than be taken prisoner.

My grandpa was permanently traumatized by the horrors of fighting the Japanese. He didnt even need to tell any stories his eyes told it all.

By the end of the war, the US made it clear that if the Japanese wanted to surrender they needed to strip.
Japanese soldiers were pretending to surrender then when troops got close enough, they would set off explosives in an attempt to commit ritual suicide and kill the enemy. The Japanese were wild in WW2

These marines hadn't had a beer in months and this man was hiding a full 8 pack in his shirt

There's no way they didn't get him a bit after finding those grenades I'd be furious if I was in their position. Fake surrender is a war crime for a good reason

My Grandfather fought the Japanese throughout the Philippines during '44-45. He was in the US Army 11th Parachute Infantry. His written accounts show them behaving like animals - killing, torturing, and hurting most everything in their path; especially if they were to be defeated. John M. Watkins would later become a lawyer and join the FBI...but his war stories went with him to the grave, as I'm sure a lot of Japanese soldiers he sent there first.

Dude wasn't just ripped, but also starving.

The japanese were the original taliban, they fought to the last man and fought without the fear of death, it was an honor for them to sacrifice themselves to take out their targets.
Insane men.

Dude becomes a prisoner of war, sent to the US, gets citizenship and a wife, has some child, only to find years later his great grandson becomes a weeb and wants to go back to where he came from to buy some anime body pillow.

Imagine how terrifying it is to surrender to an enemy that’s got loaded weapons all around pointed at you…

Many years ago, we had an older gardener who fought in WW2. I was just a young lad at the time but he fought the Germans in Europe and North Africa. He said that he respected the Germans overall but absolutely hated the Japanese and would never consider buying anything Japanese. I asked him why he had that outlook, he said. "when the Germans were beaten, they surrendered". The Japanese, on the other hand, would not give up and in most occasions both he and his comrades would have to kill them unnecessarily. He hated the Japanese as a result of having to kill them and the lifelong effect that had on his mind. Decades later, I worked for the Japanese in Hong Kong and also travelled to Japan. It's hard to imagine they were the same people.
