Its a cool way to get around counterspells, since you dont cast it, and a really cool, but really inefficient, way of morphing.

I normally summon a monster face down in defense position.

Kinda gives it a surprise. "I block your 2/2 with my 10/10 trample, flips up, 1/1 deathtouch"

Good way to get around nasty ETBs, I suppose? Phage, Leveler, Eater of Days, Phyrexian Dreadnought - I can see it having a place.

Yea this card is so confusing. Cool to see how it actually works though.

Oh wow... I feel old... Illusory Mask + Phyrexian Dreadnought was an actual combo that was played competitively. The combo has fallen out of favor, due to there being more efficient and cheaper (in mana cost) combos to get it in play, easiest example beingT1 Land, Lotus Petal, cast Dreadnought, use Stifle to counter the Dreadnoughts etb trigger.
Stiflenought is still a competitive deck, with a 1, 8% meta-share on mtggoldfish.

It becomes a Yu-Gi-Oh type trap card sneaky for counter hitters..

Reading the wording, not only is it manifesting the creature for its mana cost, it's a reusable effect and you can pay more mana than you need for whatever reason. Because clearly making your opponent think your creature is stronger than it actually is and spending mana on a fake out instead of playing more things is definitely worth it. At least it can make morphs free and can make your opponents second guess whether your big creatures are actually big while they're face down.

The weirdest version of the card is probably the one from Magic Online Masters 3 edition. You don't have to use the correct mana, so 5 colorless would still allow you to cast the Golgari Longlegs, and it would enter with X mask counters on it (where X ist the mana spent) as a 0/1. To turn it face up (at Instant Speed, no less) you just have to remove all mask counters from it. The counters serve no other function aside from being removed when you turn the creature face up (I know that theyre supposed to track how much mana was spent on that creature, but you can use other cards that add or remove counters, which is really weird).

You can circumvent expensive disguise costs or etb drawbacks so i think it could have a place if one is crazy enough to brew with it

If you have a way to give them all vigilance you can send attacks that the defending player isn’t able to do the math for

Works great with Kadena, Slinking Sorcerer

It’s essentially a old test for ninjutsu then.

How would this work with your commander in the command zone. Would commander tax still be needed to pay?

The ability sounds like flavour text lmfaoo

The original one's wording made it far more useful as it affected all face down cards, the new version only effects the cast creature.
