Imagine visiting Milan Cathedral with your family and then getting hit by an Anor Londo archer.

This is why I never go sightseeing without a halberd and a suitcase full of titanite.

Blighttown is based on the everyday London streets

Fun fact: Dark Souls is so popular that they made rolling a thing in real life.

I can't believe Vaatividya got crowdfunded to build all these replicas of Dark Souls areas. This community is so friendly and dedicated.

Maybe I'm just weird. But when I see old buildings and all the stones, bricks, and mortar in these obscure locations, I can't help but always think about the fact that those physically had to be built. I just get vivid images of people actually needing to form those bricks and stones somewhere, hauling them to these locations and physically building them brick by brick. The amount of man power and time it took to make things in older times was enormous. I dunno, whatever.

I actually really respect their use of real locations. It explains why some zones do feel so human, but grand at the same time. Rather than making something so outlandish you feel taken aback they give you something real that is so grand it fits right into the rest of their world.

So Dark Souls is a documentary after all.

The last place is Craco Vecchia (Italy, Basilicata). It is a small village initially abandoned around the 60s and finally in 1980 after an earthquake that caused parts of the city to collapse. Today it is called "ghost town". When I first visited it a few weeks ago, as I approached I thought "Wow I'm in Dark Souls". The video does not do justice to what you find when you arrive: crows flying over abandoned and destroyed buildings, the disturbing silence of a place where other people used to live and where now everything is motionless and still in time and finally a small cemetery near the city, with its lighted candles. I felt a sense of awe and uneasiness but at the same time I felt at home. Unfortunately I did not find any bonfires

I was not expecting to see the Crystal Cave in real life, that's amazing.

i Live in Milano, Italy...you can't imagine how i felt the first time i arrived at Anor Londo in my first playthrough of Dark Souls
i immediately thought that it had to be inspired by the Duomo...the only thing missing is the golden statue on top representing the virgin Mary (vergine Maria / madonna in italian[yes..madonna like the singer])

I especially love the last one, with the Abyss.

I love it when video games base their locations on real places. It's one of the very few things in games that hasn't changed since the very beginning, and that makes me very happy.
