Invasions not only the reason. Real reason south india has access to ports and hence had maritime connections with rome egypt and sea trade was flourishing which happened in north india too during the reign of akbar and shajahan they used eastern ports. Who knows the reason behind temple architecture in south india had some inpiration from rome engineering .
