My mom kept 200+ butterflies in the house to the point where my dad had to make a "no caterpillar poop on the table DURING DINNER SPECIFICALLY" rule. She got mad at me for not making eye contact but ALSO taught me how to stare at the correct spot on a persons forehead to make them THINK im making eye contact when im not. Love her, what a legend.

I got my diagnosis when I was about 5. My mom was explaining it to my grandparents. After we left, my grandad turned to my grandma and had the self-awareness to ask: "is that me?"

Painfully accurate.
During my diagnosis the people running it said "and as you'll probably know from your diagnosis" to my mother that wasn't diagnosed but so clearly presenting that they clocked in based on my appointment 😂
My poor mother was so confused she started reading all the stuff they gave to me and books recommended to me to read too and now she's like "my whole life now makes so much sense"

My mom was so convinced I was neurotypical and that everyone goes through what I go through. I was diagnosed with ADHD at 21, my little sister was diagnosed a year later at 17 and my mom shortly after at 50. She went to a therapist and found out that no, not everyone feels/ act like this. She was SHOCKED. 😂

"There's no family history of autism." You mean there's no documented history. If my diagnosis taught me anything, it's that truth. 💀

"You have it from your father's side..."
Mother's side:
Great-Uncle: lived in a home for the criminally insane and presented auDHD with low intelligence (was taken advantage of)
Grandfather: smoked three packs a day for 50 years, didn't stop to save his life
Grandmother: can't sit for half an hour, presses all clothes (including underwear and bedsheets), scatterbrained to the max, intensely emotional
Mother: tracked her sleep for a year, just for fun, tracks food, doesn't have friends, doesn't like parties, does the same things every day
Brother: couldn't finish his own degrees, but wrote BAs for other people, addicted to food, irregular everything, forgets everything, is fun and outgoing and very active but crashes and needs down time a lot...

I'm CLEARLY the only one. Clearly there's none else experiencing neurodivergency.

I was tested for a bunch of things in grade school with no results basically other than too smart so bored and lazy, sensitive, creative, not socially adept. 🙄 In college I found out I was autistic but didn't tell anyone until like 5-10 years ago. My mom wasn't quick to believe me because "we had you tested!" I'm not mad at her, she was trying to help but it was the 90s in the midwest. Girls didn't have autism and didn't present differently for ADD or ADHD. She didn't know the testers failed. Recently she's learned more and is on board. The other day she called me up to tell me she thinks my dad is autistic, too. I'm like .... Well yeah, just don't tell him that.

I don’t walk on my toes so I thought “I’m not a toe walker, my autism is mild”
Turns out most people don’t land their steps toes first

Reminds me of the time I was very very little (2ish) and my parents were getting me evaluated for autism and the doctor told them “yeah she’s too young to really pinpoint and exact diagnosis so we don’t really know” and then turned to my dad and said “but if you were my patient as a kid I would’ve signaled you as autistic.” According to my mom, he told the doctor “back in my day, we would’ve called it gifted”
Now that I’ve gotten an official diagnosis I’ve been telling my dad about all the things he and I do that are signs and symptoms of level 1 autism.
“I feel like every time I go down to [insert state his work company is based in], I’m putting on this ‘work’ version of myself, which is fine for a few days but then it gets tiring and when I get home at the end of the week I feel like I’ve lost myself a bit”
“Dad that’s called masking. I do it all the time”
It’s been pretty great, it’s helped us connect a bit more!
(On an unrelated note, today I learned that if you put 3 neurodivergent people in a room (me and my two ADHD friends) with a mix of helium and non-helium balloons, they will be entertained for a good hour)

When I was a kid, I noticed this girl only walked on her toes. It was like she was practicing for point shoes but wasn't. I told her she might be autistic. The next day her Mom came up to me and yelled that her daughter isn't autistic. I was 13 14? So, that was weird. 15 years later I ran into the girl and she got a diagnosis and her Mom is still mad and won't acknowledge it.

"the rest of the day is gone". So accurate, my husband couldn't understand why i had a melt down about trying to make plans for cooking dinner and having to change it 3 times over the course of two days bc he made plans without telling me and then his mom (we live with our in laws) at the last of an ingredient i needed and I didn't know until an hour before it was supposed to be dinner time

I took my daughter in to get tested for autism. They said no but she ADHD with autistic traits. I asked what they meant by that. They look at me and said they are learned characteristics. Um, learned from who?

You would be surprised how often I hear this from parent with kids on the spectrum. Our family is a bit different though. My dad and grandfather both had Asperger’s (now ASD 1), but being female my symptoms (including not talking until 3 and lining up and sorting everything all the time) were ignored. At 15 a teacher in one of my AP classes finally pestered my mom into having me tested, determining I have the same diagnosis. Moms response “oh, interesting..” then was ignored. My son started with ASL just before 1 yr, was speaking basic English and Spanish, then regressed just before 2 to no outward communication (including no eye contact or pointing). Within 6 months he had his diagnosis (lvl 3 at that time), and we started therapies. Now in kindergarten (ASD lvl 2, almost meets criteria for lvl 1) he talks non stop (English), uses ASL when he is too frustrated to form words, is in gen ed with supports, and currently being evaluated for ADHD too. I’m
Always in disbelief when people think there is no genetic component.

Literally my mom. I got diagnosed with autism and she insists it’s from my dad’s side but GURL look at yourself AND YOUR BROTHER???? Her special interest is BTS and it’s so funny she’s like “I like this band a normal amount” 😊
