The problem with movies like They Live, as well as The Matrix, is that they don't think their premise through to its logical conclusion. As soon as we discover that we are being lied to, we *also* discover that it possible to lie to us; consequently, we are no longer able to discern truth from lies, and will never be able to work out once and for all if the picture we have of reality is accurate. Neo never discovers whether everything he's told is true, and John Nada never finds out if the sunglasses show him the truth or lie to him.

They Live, The Matrix, and Dark City are just a few great films that really expose how easy and plausible it would be to manipulate the public, and have them believing and living a complete lie, but it'd be perceived completely normal by them due to years of conditioning/brainwashing from governments and media programs. Fact is stranger than fiction.
