So looking forward to reading "Compound Fracture." Always appreciate your reviews/recommendations. Just had my first foray into horror with another one of your recs, "Model Home, " and that book MESSED ME UP. Truly a very uncomfortable and unsettling read, especially harrowing towards the end. It left me all outta wack for a day or two after, such a great read.

I know a horror short story maybe you haven't read yet. "The Snails", by Patricia Highsmith. It's a short story that she later rewrote (as "The quest for blank cavoringi") because she thought the first version was too violent. Of course, I recommend the first story which was published in Saturday Evening Post and Reader's Digest.

I've been in such a slump after 2 misses with some books, it's been hard to get back into it. The overly sunny November did not help at all, but finally the weather has turned now and your enthusiasm for the horror and thrillers you mentioned is contagious. So I am looking forward to try Compound Fracture and The Boyfriend. I love Freida Mcfadden's books and I think you made a really good point, that she doesn't mind you figuring out the villain or the twist, because you still have a trainwreck to witness till the end.

I already have What Have You Done on my TBR. It sounds so good! It'll be my first read of Shari Lapena so hoping to find a new author I like. Just added Compound Fracture to my list. Sounds great! Thanks for the review. As usual great video.

the description of the What Have you done book reminds me of the Bennet Ramsay case where I was convinced one or both of the parents had to be lying.⚛❤

I was moved to consider Compound Fracture simply by your enthusiasm. I’m not much for young adult, but you did peek my interest. Will have to think about it though bc I am not sure about the violence to animals. I feel kind of like another commentator that said she can take violence to humans all day, but not to animals. Not sure what that says about me but, there it is.

All three of Andrew Joseph White's books are phenomenal. I read _Compound Fracture_ as an ARC at the beginning of the year and I loved it. I would have liked a little more supernatural vibes, especially as compared to his other two books, but I still really enjoyed it. His books are all published by a YA imprint, and they are what caused me to really consider what exactly is meant by "young adult" as a marketing strategy more than a narrative modality.

I agree 100% about _Memorials, _ I was also disappointed... However I didn't have as high expectations as you. I love his _Boogeyman_ novels, but that is tempered by his collabs with Stephen King... He and King co-wrote the "Gwendy's Button Box" trilogy. However, more specifically, he and King co-wrote books 1 and 3, and Chizmar wrote book 2 on his own... and it is easily the weakest of the trilogy, almost enough to make you not want to finish it... So I had that experience going in to _Memorials_ and I think it shaped my expectations appropriately.

One book I don't see mentioned that is a new release that you should really try to get in by the end of the year is _American Rapture_ by C. J. Leede. This is her second book, after last year's _Maeve Fly, _ and I loved it. The writing style in _Maeve Fly_ was very stylized, and I was worried that was going to be the author's schtick, but it isn't she shows that she can modulate writing style to match the story, and I think _American Rapture_ surpassed _Maeve Fly, _ to be honest.

Thanks for the mention of harm to animals in Compound Fracture. As enticing as it sounds, that's usually a dealbreaker for me 😬 I can take human violence all day long but can't stomach it with animals usually 🫣

The twist was good in The Boyfriend by F McFadden, but I didn't like the epilogue . Wasn't needed in my opinion. Sequel bait maybe 🤷🏾‍♂️
