I enjoy your reviews especially the fact that you don't apologize for liking The Dark Things (in our horrible P.C. age). Thanks.

I loved Dear Laura. It definitely lingers in my mind. Too bad it didn’t hit that mark for you too. I haven’t read any of these others, though. But they sound really great aside from There’s Someone Inside Your House. In The Miso Soup is high on my tbr.

Dear Laura still haunts me. I loved it, but I can see how it might not be everyone's fave. I think You Should Have Left was made into a movie. The most disturbing book I ever read was about a woman who fell in love with her abuser. It turned my stomach and upset me so much I can't even remember the title now!

I love this, Rachel! Before your channel, I rarely read horror except for the occasional King novel, but I’ve put so many recs on my tbr and discovered new authors because of you! How We Broke Sounds like something I’d enjoy. I’d be curious to check out In the Miso Soup too!

My darkest most disturbing... Exquisite Corpse by Poppy Z. Brite. I've had Miso Soup on my tbr for quite sometime, but haven't had the urge to pick it up. Maybe not so much now after hearing your thoughts.

How We Broke sounds right up my alley. I have not heard of it before, so thank you so much for putting it on my radar. I went through an unfortunate "true crime" phase where I read true crime novels. It was very short-lived because I don't have the stomach for the gory details. I am more interested in the "whodunit" and "why" aspect of true crime. Some of the books I read in that phase are the most disturbing books I have ever read.
For fiction, the most disturbing books I have read are The Girl Next Door by Jack Ketchum-which I DNF'd, American Psycho by Bret Easton Ellis, and The Collector by John Fowles. I recommend American Psycho. The Collector was shocking for its day. I can't recommend The Girl Next Door, but other people love it, including Cameron Chaney, who did a great job of explaining why he loved it. I recommend saving the money and just reading an article on the Sylvia Likens case. The Jack Ketchum novel I recommend, also disturbing, is Red.

Totally agree about There’s Someone Inside Your House. I loved the cover and was excited for it... but it wasn’t what I was wanting. Waaay too much romance. Some of the kills were nice but I think it took me several months to get through that tiny book. 😆

"Japan as a country" made me laugh, I'll remember that. I guess when it comes to things like this book (which I haven't read in particular, but I believe you), some aspects of Japan have to be distinguished.

Also cudos on the Bahni Turpin shout out. Probably skip the "inside house" book on your suggestion... I loved her Southern Bookclub Guide to Killing Vampires audiobook.... and certainly the Dread Nation books

Marina Lostetter has a new horror book coming out April 12: The Helm of Midnight. I mostly like her Noumenon books (4 and 3 stars out of 5) so I may eventually pick up this book too.

I believe the omen is just the Novelization of the movie based on the authors screenplay

The most disturbing book I've read is by far 1793 by Niklas Natt Och Dag. Ever wanted to read about a detective mystery to identify a dismembered corpse with no teeth and eyes? Does that sound disturbing to you? Well, it gets even worse.

This is the one book that made me feel physically nauseous and absolutely terrible. It's one of my favorite books.

Dear Laura didn't hold up for me either. Having been in a stalker situation before, victims don't give their stalker personal trinkets of themselves. It doesn't happen. So that was a weird tale for me and I didn't care for it.
