Achilles, just slain in the Trojan War, arrives in the Underworld and is greeted by Sibyl of Cumae— a prophetess and also the realm’s local guide. Though it gets a bad rap, Sibyl is determined to prove to the newcomer that hell is actually a lovely place to live; bursting with historic charm and eccentric neighbors. Iseult Gillespie takes a tour of the Underworld and its most infamous inhabitants.

Lesson by Iseult Gillespie, directed by Arvind Singh Jeena, Nikhita Prabhudesai Jeena, Totem Creative.

the little expression on Achilles' face when she brought up Patroclus' name was precious

Achilleus expressions throughout this video are great. He doesn't have to say a single word, but you always know how he feels.

Achilles expressions are the most realistic expressions anyone would make when they just died and suddenly some lady started to give you a tour you didn't ask for.

Those teary eyes upon hearing the name Patroclus. You had no right to do that to my heart, Ted Ed.

This felt like Persephone herself guided Achilles and all of us through the domains of Hades. Absolutely wonderful.

I like to think Patroclus and Achilles reunited in the underworld and lived happily ever after

I was bummed when you guys were making less and less greek mythology videos, these videos are getting rarer by the day! I was glad to see you guys are making them again.

Odd that they didn't include the Titans during the tour of Tartarus. They are some of the most important figures in Greek mythology. When the Olympians won the war against the Titans, the latter were overthrown and banished to Hades. Since the Titans are primoridal forces of nature, they cannot be killed, so the Olympians had no choice but to imprison them in Tartarus, the darkest deepest depths of the Underworld. For all of eternity, the Olympians have to struggle to keep the Titans locked away, lest chaos be unleashed upon the world and disrupt the order of the Olympians. Since the Gods of Mount Olympus symbolize the faults and flaws of humanity, as well as what we strive to be, they also represent mankind's eternal struggle against chaos by upholding order through great effort and struggling. After all, it takes an individual of great strength, such as an Olympian, to overcome the Titanic forces of everyday existence.

I learned about Greek mythology from Hades the video game and I am certainly proud of it 😂

I liked Albert Camus’ nihilistic interpretation of Sisyphus as not torture but always having a motivation, a goal to reach. Because no matter what happens, he never gives up. He still, day in and day out, tries to push the boulder up the hill. He could easily give up, yet he never does.

is it normal to imagine that one part of the underworld would look a bit like a reception in an airport or am i just insane in the head

The narrator voice and tone is so inviting, you’d think that’s an Ad or a virtual tour for a college or a sorority 😂
But Nope, it’s the underworld

And then there’s the realm of Asphodel, the “purgatory” of the underworld. Sadly goes overlooked a lot with its long list of listless inhabitants, but hey it beats Tartarus. (Except if you’ve played Hades; in which case it’s constantly on fire.)

Kudos to animators and Ted Ed team. They are the Picassos of knowledge turning random dry topics into vibrant work of art that makes learning fun.🙏🙏❤❤

Another mythological Greek figure known to have done a similar gruesome act was Lycaon - king of Arcadia - who was then punished by Zeus by being turned into a wolf.
