How to time on a VVT-i 2JZ, ASMR Edition.

This is very satisfying

you forget to mention to do 2 full rotations of the engine to make sure alignment is correct after fitment.

Just wanna clarify as I recently changed the timing belt on the Aristo vvti swap on my NA supra. You can still use the dots on the cams but make sure you line them up with the yellow (first mark as turning crankshaft clockwise) mark on the crankshaft pulley at 0 mark TDC. The next mark it on the crankshaft is white will definitely subsequently line up with the dash marks on the cams. Also make sure you rotate the crankshaft with the belt on while applying a little pressure on the belt to make sure everything line up properly before releasing the tensioner pin. Cheers :)

Thanks, I am just replacing my timing belt among other things, and this is most helpful.

Life f**king saver video right here! Holy sh*t I looked everywhere for info given here in only 12 minutes. My fb IS300 help forums, myIS, etc. I even bought the manufacturer service book and nothing detailed how to properly time a 2jzGE vvti engine.
Thanks

Something I learned over the years about torquing stuff is if you click it more then once you have now over torqued the part by say half a foot pound or so just something I learned not saying you are wrong in your practices just throwing it out there

Timing belt you start at the crank and than, move the belt to the intake cam, over to the exhaust cam and over tensioner.

I purchased a car which has a 2JZ engine swap. It's idling OK but has a huge flat spot on giving gas with no power at all. I checked the cam sprocket alignment at TDC. There are no dents or lines on the sprockets, only a v-shaped mark that somebody has drawn on there with a marking pen. Perhaps the sprockets were bolted on back to front. (if this is even possible?)
Is there a way I can check if these marks are correct because I have the feeling they may not be.
If you could demonstrate how to get both cams in alignment without having to trust these marks.
i.e. by visually placing the cams in their correct rotary positions in relation to each other.
Great video BTW. :-)

Great video probably one of your best as this was clear and easy to understand 🖒 Happy New Year to all

Everyone crying about “he didn’t rotate the motor afterwards to insure timing”. Thats general mechanical knowledge. Hes showing specifically how to time this particular motor. He’s not doing a general “how to” time your motor. This was a great video. Stop trolling for no reason. If folks don’t know that they need to rotate it afterwards they shouldn’t be doing their timing belt themselves. 🤷

You didnt say anything about the #1 piston being in TDC.. is that not a issue with the 2J? Or is it kinda common sense so not mentioned

How about spinning the crank over a few times then rechecking the timing marks!

Wow, I was told to line it up to the dots. Hopefully I didn't damage anything, I do have a GTE head gasket on my GE so hopefully I got lucky and didn't smack the valves

Mr. Function,
I’m in the process of doing a valve seal job on my auto mkiv. I’m in the step (following step by step Supraforum pics) where I just released the tensioner to the timing belt in order to take out my cams and get to the valves and seals.
My question is, is it a good idea to replace the timing belt since I’m already in knee deep work? If so, I’m confused and concerned I will mess my engine up if I don’t do the timing belt correct? I noticed you stuck to aligning the dead center markings both on the gears and the crank. Is that basically all I need to do to install the timing belt? Is it that easy?

By the way, the instructions fir the valve seals require me to remove the cams and gears. Do they need to be put back a certain way or a certain alignment?
Any help will do.
Thanks and Merry Christmas.

cool video, but dont you have to rotate it manual to ensure everything stays lined up? on a honda they recommend 3 full revolutions to ensure the marks stay.
