This is the part I'm struggling the most with my current backyard situation. I know that its good practice to get several quotes and stuff, but my 3 quotes for roughly 390 feet of fencing have been $3500, $6, 000, and $8, 000. Those are all so drastically different that I don't want to feel like I'm paying some college kid to build a fence thats going fall down in the first hurricane, but I also don't want to pay more than twice that amount for someone who may be trying to give me those prices because I'm a woman and thinks since I'm not personally building it myself, they are trying to take advantage of me. This is the most stressful part for me.

How I basically explain it to my potential customers... The fence industry is so competitive and we're so busy during the season, that there is no time for sales games. We give the best price we can on the spot.

Well, I am planning to put an aluminium fence myself in the middle of the land for about an acre out of 6 acres I have. I take this project as a heck of a workout putting up the fence at my own pace. So, I'll be spending just for the material. and lots for time in workout. Thanks for sharing the information.

Average project at $4, 000 dang i just priced up materials to replace (31) 8’ long 6’ high panels with a horizontal pvc horizontal boards…@ $25, 000. Drop pvc to PT then I’m at $17k. Thats no labor mind you. Not wanting to spend that much we changed design to DIY custom cedar picture framed fence, square panels from HD and reusing existing posts I estimate total will be @ $6k doing myself.

Taxes depends on profits which depends on prices, so both profits and taxes move when they give you a price cut.

I've always found when I quote a job the materials are half the price. Almost every time! I find it a great rule of thumb for people starting out to see if your quote is reasonable or not.
