In this video Doctor O'Donovan explains key things you need to know about hand dermatitis (aka hand eczema), including causes, symptoms plus demonstrations with real life photographs to help you better recognise this common skin condition. We also cover treatment options and things you can do at home to help.

What is hand dermatitis (eczema)?

Hand eczema, also known as hand dermatitis, is a common type of eczema that affects about 10% of the U.S. population.

What causes hand dermatitis?

Genetics, contact allergens and irritating substances play a role in “triggering” this form of eczema. It often affects people who work in cleaning, catering, hairdressing, healthcare and mechanical jobs where they may come into contact with chemicals and other irritants. It is a type of contact dermatitis which forms because of chemical irritants in the environment.

What are the symptoms of hand dermatitis (eczema)?

- Dry, cracked, scaly skin on the hands
- Redness (though this might not be present on black or brown skin)
- Itchy skin in the affected area
- Pain
- Dryness, to the point of peeling and flaking.
- Possible signs of infection e.g. oozing

Treatment of hand dermatitis?

The best treatment for hand eczema is avoiding what caused it.

Knowing which substances trigger your hand eczema and protecting your hands at home and at work, can help guard your skin against further irritation. The most important thing to remember is to be consistent — a daily skin care routine is the best defense.

I've had eczema since I was a baby I'm 42 now and just about to start photopherapy tomorrow I am hoping and praying that it may cure me, the amount of time's I've self harmed and wanted to end it all because of this skin disease, it's took my confidence sometimes I can't leave the house or when I go somewhere I never want to be in the lime light, I'd rather be at the back somewhere kind of out the way, I hate photo's of myself too just ugly.My hand's would be so sore and my knuckles would split open and bleed if I try clench a fist I felt so ugly around girls.

First noticed that I had suddenly a three inch area of my hand turning red. No irritation, no discomfort. Then it took over my fingers and wrist (quite disfiguring) and itched intensely. Scratching only exacerbated the condition and the only relief I could muster was to expose the affected area to scalding hot shower water for just the briefest moment. That killed the itching immediately. Subsequent outbreaks seem to be related to the ingestion of leafy greens such as Kale, Mustard Greens etc.

Thank you doctor. It's well explained and I have learned so much about my condition. And now I have to treat my hand before it gets severe.

Thank you for this video. My hand itching appears to be stress induced(?) It started as an older adult. It disappears when I'm on holiday and when I took a less stressful job. I haven't found a cream that works, so I'll try the Nursem. Thank you.

Currently suffering from this my self and it's so hard to deal with especially since I'm the dishwasher and the restaurant I work at so I'm constantly in water, using concentrated washing up liquid, harsh chemicals, even putting on non latex gloves underneath bigger gloves and banding them to seal out any liquids falling in, it still is becoming a nightmare
