You are a genius. I'm gonna watch it again tomorrow before i start working. Not art, but something else. U got me focused on working the thing I love. I was just procastinating just because I was scared.

Oh my gosh thank you for talking about the "Don't rely on a reference photo all the time" thing people on YouTube say sometimes. I never used to believe it but I've heard it so much recently, I've started to feel bad for needing one everytime I paint... like what the heck?? So thank you for calling out that bulls**t, I really needed to hear that from a legit artist again.

You're pretty awesome for how much of yourself you offer to people who want to learn. :)

Very entertaining humour, which made watching all the more pleasurable. Now ... back to my fish scales. Got to get this swan looking less like a Coelacanth.

I'm just doing some crafts and painting because I enjoy it. My biggest wish is to be able to paint portraits, especially in oils. Portraits to me are the ultimate goal. I watch others on youtube paint. They work the face and work the face - I'm not quite getting what they are working on for so long, so till I really see and understand I guess, I won't try. I know I have to start somewhere but I think I'm scared to.

this should help me A LOT. I think values is my biggest issue. Values and giving up too soon and starting over

You are right on the nose on this one. Simply practicing what were bad at will only ingrains that bad abuility further. We must analyze why we keep making those same bad things in our art and seek out proper skilled instruction to help us improve ourselves

I can’t tell you how much I laughed at “time to get dad out of laundry”!!! 😂 brilliant video, I’m going to do some charcoal studies now!

Completely agree. I've stuck with oils as I understand how they move, how they dry and how they change. As much as i love watercolours & inks, they are best left for wizards and unicorns.

Hi, I am a Acrylic painter, I needed this video, it gives me fresh perspective, thank you for this video, I am currently stagnant in my art work, I struggle with painting canvases with a undercoat or base colour, light and dark issues, priming my canvas, I don’t step back as often, I keep reapplying paint when I don’t need to, less opaque transparent issues, but it’s good to get these grievances out of my system, again thank you 🙏

I love the new graphics you've been adding in and love your husband pulling skits. It's awesome.

My dear mentor Al Stine used to always say…..”paint what you see…not what you know.” Great advice about retraining our brain to think a different way.

You are the artist that helps and inspires me. 🥰. I’ve never worked with charcoal.

I thought of this recently too! Before I jump into my coloured media and paints, I thought I need to brush up on my drawing skills first and I just felt like charcoal was super fast, so I purchased a starter pack of general's charcoal pencils. I love them! I was able to create a realistic sketch in an hour!

Wow!!
I needed this!
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

This gives me a whole new perspective on my “not so good areas” … you really put it in a way that makes me want to overcome my sore painting areas and not get frustrated and walk away.
And yes …who came up with the nonsense that you’re cheating if you look at reference photos!!!! That also has been a big struggle for me.. cause I always thought I was doing something wrong or not a good enough artist.
So thank you!! 🥰
