In this video Doctor O'Donovan explains key things you need to know to recover from knee replacement surgery. This video is relevant if you have had, or are soon to have, a partial knee or total knee replacement surgery.

What is knee replacement surgery?

Knee replacement surgery (knee arthroplasty) is surgery to replace all or some of your knee joint. Your surgeon will replace damaged cartilage and bone with a prosthetic joint. It can take up to a year to recover fully after a knee replacement, but you'll be able to resume some of your usual activities gradually as you heal.

What to do after knee replacement surgery:

1. Use crutches or walking sticks at first and follow the plan that your physiotherapist has designed for you.
2. A walking aid can be used after 6-8 weeks.
3. Try walk every 5-10 minutes to prevent a blood clot from forming.
4. Driving - wait at least 6 weeks to drive again if you've had a total knee replacement or 3 weeks if you've had a partial knee replacement – ALWAYS check with your doctor that you're fit to drive
5.Avoid twisting your knee, bending down and reaching up as much as possible
6. Keep your leg raised as much as possible to reduce swelling
7. You can normally return to work after 6-12 weeks; but this will depend on the type of work you do and you should seek the opinion of your health provider / surgeon before doing so.

My recovery in hospital after a TKR was spent screaming for oxycodone, followed by screaming for more oxycodone when I got home. In between that I was begging for amputation! I have always had a high pain threshold but I was one of the unlucky ones who had a bad time and complications. I am told I will forget in time and be grateful I had the op but am still waiting…and so is my friend who had one at the same time. I know people who have sailed through it and that it is the norm rather than the exception. I needed this operation so just have to grin and bear it, and pray…

I'm in my hospital room at this very moment. 🇺🇸 missouri. Total knee replacement. For me...I've been in severe pain constant pain. Pills and shots . It's 1a.m. no way to sleep. At this point I wish I wouldn't have had it done. But I'm told in few weeks I'll be thinking of have the other replaced. But at this moment (surgery was at 10am ..2 hours) I wish I'd just continued with the pain I had.

I would like to ask a question for my mum as she has been referred for a knee replacement 8 years ago and last week again however she cannot take a decision as she is diabetic and 65 years old. Could you please suggest if she should go for the knee replacement if she is diabetic, 65 years old, she’s on insulin and she had steroid injections in the knee 3 times in the last 10 years. Please suggest/advice? Would be really appreciated. If u have any question please let me know.

Had a total knee replacement almost 6weeks ago. One week in hosp. Three weeks in a rehab facility. Im at home now. I'm still in severe pain off and on and am still using narcotic meds every 4-5 hrs. This has been theWORST TIME OF MY LIFE, CAN'T STAND WHEN PAIN HITS ME! NOT DOING THIS EVER. EVER AGAIN. I'll use a wheelchair if needed. Hospital experience in Ontario is horrible and horrific! Nohelp, understaffed, halls andfloors were filthy! HEALTHCARE INONTARIO NEEDS MORE FUNDING!! NOT. MY. CANADA!!!
