Basically, they were wearable shields.

Those silly hats are called eboshi, and they have been around forever. Generally, they, like the Heian courtly dress (or kariginu) are closely tied with shinto shamanic tradition and the imperial court.

Fun little tidbit, I keep forgetting what the hat is called BUT i remember they share the name with Princess Mononoke's antagonist, so when I want to remember, I think of that particular movie...

And I love the fact that sundowner actually used that style of armour

Basically, the old armor was more of the school of "let's just strap small shields all over our bodies", kind of defense.

Less people know of the Genpei wars early samurai period, many of the sengoku jidai samurais derived from the Minamoto, Taira, and Fujiwara

OMG! I have found another O-yoroi fan. I love o-yoroi so much that I play Shogun 2 rise of the samurai dlc just to watch samurais in these armor. I also love to read manga setting in 12th century Japan because it has these beautiful armors.

The box-y look of the armor also served as a sort of buffer area for the wearer as well. Since it is not tightly fitting, if somehow an arrow is to pierce the armor, it won’t penetrate the wearer (or at least not as deeply) since there is space between the armor (that slowed down the arrows momentum) and their body.

The Ō-Yoroi is very intricately designed and made and is probably one of the best armors for the context it is used for.

I recall the shoulder pads can also be use as a shield, which is one thing i really hope a lot of samurai movies from any period could depict, at the very least debunked the myth that they dont have/use any shield

European Knights mostly used spears, but we also associate them with swords.

Reminds me of those little shoulder shields that classical era pikemen wore. It would help guard them while they held the giant 2 haded pike

The ampunt of coverage they provide when used in a melee situation is a lot, surprisngly since the entirety of the arm could be covered when taking on certain stances.
