Trained Samurai could even swim with their armor

The original style was not obsolete. Regular samurai armor could deflect bullet fire just as fine because of it's metal, leather liner, and laquer combo that gave it shock protection. Nanban Armor came in the later half and didnt see as much combat, use mostly as vanity wear by higher ups. Samurai armor was still used in the Boshin war against modern muskets and gatling guns. The colors is often not indicate of his clan but rather personal preference (if he was wealthy wnough to buy his own than loan it.) They would rather have symbols applied or have sashimono banners to indicate their clans.

Genpei seisui ki by Sanemitsu Tohei in 13th century
「Concerning one-on-one battles, it was common to cut at each other with a katana after battling using bows and arrows, which was followed by kumiuchi (grappling ) .」

The colours were also chosen for what they represented in Buddhism. For example the extremely common deep indigo was believed to represent good luck in battle. Hence why it was called "winning colour", or Kachi-iro 勝色. Another reason why the colour was popular is because, it was worn by low ranked nobles in the Heian period, a class that the Samurai would belong to at the time.

There were no gunsmith in Japan during the heian period. Also the Japanese were inspired by the Portuguese traiders' armor.

Seems like a similar concept to European brigandines. Cool👍

Gotta disagree with the mobility aspect mentioned. Unless youre talking about the Tosei dou gosuku, earlier forms of samurai armor were quite cumbersome. I'm speaking from personal experience from wearing a friends O-yoroi. You can definitely tell it was designed for a cavalry archer as melee combat on foot kinda sucks in it. The shoulder plates and cuirass shape really mess with arm mobility in regards to melee combat. However, it excels in arm mobility in regards to archery. The back 180° of mobility is amazing allowing for good full draws of the bow, which makes perfecf sense considering that the samurai were initially horse archers before they were ever mounted spearman.
