Leading to the IV chord with a tritone substitution is one of the quickest ways I know of to sound like a legit gospel/soul piano player. Check it out with me!

I'm starting to get addicted to your videos Aimee. I've been playing piano for almost 50 years now, and still learn something new each day.

I've seen lots of videos on youtube about TT subs...yours is by far the best! I've heard this sound before, but never thought to try using it to go to a IV...

Easiest way to remember where your Tritone sub is, is a half tone above your target. Chord. Easiest way I've found anyway. :)

Great video.

Hello! I just started watching some of your videos and appreciate your energy and passion! These lessons are a tad bit advanced for where I'm at musically but I feel motivated to go further. Thank you :)

This is an outstanding explanation! Not only what the chord is and how to use it. Thanks

awesome I like this being applied to popular tunes .. When jazz players have shown me before I usually ignore it because it doesn't always sound good but now I see it in context of songs I love.

the chorus of "I have nothing" by Whitney Houston (this one features a key change as well; the pre-chorus ends is in G and ends on D7, the chorus starts on an Ebmaj7. In fact the final chorus even has the tritone sub built in, by using the V of Bb, F7, to land on the IV of B, Emaj7)

11:36 that B9 - pure bliss! it flows so nicely. the #9 seems to "jump" to the next root in a slightly awkward way.

Aimee this is awesome. Sort of new to theory/piano and would love more soul/gospel stuff. This was really helpful. Thanks!!

I agree with you in “Let’s Stay Together”. The 9 works because of the D, C#, C movement. My ear like that.
