Terrible Whining Noise EASILY FIXED!

In this video I fix my 2005 GMC Envoy, which is also like a Trailblazer, from a common whining noise issue. What I first thought was a power steering pump issue actually turned out to be a simple idler pulley fix. I replaced the original idler pulley with a genuine ACDelco unit and it worked perfectly. No more whining noise and it cost just about $25.

***EAGLE-EYED VIEWERS***
You may have noticed the pulley coming off the engine was different than the one I showed as the comparison with the bad bearing. This is because the pulley that I pulled off the motor was an old part I had laying around that I threw on while waiting for the new part to come in. The pulley I showed with the bad bearing was indeed the original part that was causing the whining noise.

After years of frustration and hundreds of dollars replace a water pump, power steering pump, alternator, etc. I came across this video and decided to give it a shot. I changed out 2 pulleys, smooth and grooved (together less than $20), and couldn't believe it. Now my engine is quiet. I cannot thank you

So this was 100% my issue. Bought a new AC Delco replacement and done after 15 minutes or so. Thanks

Man Jimmy... You Sir May have just ended my most aggravating thing about my 2005 Tahoe. Even though the sound wasn’t horrible to anyone else in the vehicle, it annoyed the sh*t outta me. Found my new weekend project!!

Thank you for posting this video! Man I have had that noise on my 2005 silverado for months! I thought it was alternator, power steering....I could not figure it out. I came across your video and I was like oh SH*t can it be that simple? It sure was. My truck is nice and quiet again and I actually sat in it for 15 minutes running enjoying the silence. Only a $22 fix. Thanks again!

Thank you for sharing this. You saved me so much trouble shooting and money. I was certain that it was the power steering pump. I luckily came across your post, bought the idler pulley and my son put it on. Problem fixed!! Thanks again.

Hint.

Place one of those magnetic trays under the pulley or whatever you are working on and if you drop the bolt or nut the tray has a good chance of catching it and stop it from dropping into an difficult to get to or inaccessible place.

I have a 2000 Astro...120, 000 miles, that's actually low for the type engine...Flushed the power steering system, same noise...Then I realized the noise didn't get louder turning the steering wheel turning and suspect the idler pulley just like in this case...This video convinced me to try it before a power steering replacement...Think how dumb I'd feel then...The noise is the same, I only hope the problem is too...Thanks for doing this video...You may have saved me a lot of time and headache...I'll be back to let everyone know.

I have had this same noise for a couple of months on my 2000 Jimmy. I noticed that the noise would go away at times depending on if it was damp outside or dry. The whine also goes in sync when you accelerate. I figured it was not the transmission, and knew it wasn't the power steering. A little frustrated today after driving because things have been continuously breaking and I'm thinking, now what? I decided to google this and came up with your video. It sounds exactly the same. I had changed this Idler pulley with a Duralast a few years ago because of a different sound that was more like a bad bearing. Thank you!

Good stuff. I will recommend a mechanic's stethoscope, about $10 at parts store, which will greatly help you pinpoint the source of a noise. Your Envoy is pretty crowded and you'd have to be VERY careful when using it. I diagnosed a bad power steering pump in my 1993 Jeep Wrangler that way.

I had the same problem with my Chrysler van. It started making that whining noise accompanied by an obvious bearing noise at around 180k+ miles. So I got under the hood and replaced the pulley, and let me tell you, it is a very difficult job to do on these Chrysler minivans. There is very little space between the wheel well and the engine. The space was very little that I had to get a stubbier socket to fit on the idler pulley.

You can remove the seal of the bearing carefully with a small pick and clean out the factory grease and use good grease of your choice. I prefer Amsoil but it works so much better!
