My 2011 6 speed does the same thing. I’ve been told it’s normal. But if it helps you sleep better you can check the trans fluid. I wouldn’t worry too much about it though. Given it’s such a small car you’ll hear a lot more noise than regular econo boxes…
I’ve been driving the piss out of my NC for the past two years (while it’s been making this whining noise) and I’ve had zero issues. Great cars these are.

2011 v6 ls Camaro never made tht noise. Recently the steering fluid hose broke so I took it to the shop to get replaced. I got the her back and this is the first sound I noticed. Very concerned

I have the same issue, and upon a search, I figured out it's very common and probably completely normal. I'll have my service soon, and I'll mention it.
Also, the other day one NC passed by me while I was out for a walk, and I heard a similar noise when it accelerated.

If the whine is only there when in gear and accelerating it’s a bearing in the gearbox, take it to a gearbox specialist and get it repaired before it takes out the gearbox completely 👍

My 09 mazda 3 just started doing this at 133k miles idk if its the transmission but its driving fine for the past 6000 miles

It’s just how the transmissions are designed. I beat on my car pretty hard and shift at the redline often and the noise hasn’t changed a bit so it shouldn’t be a sign of failure/wear or anything. Be aware these transmissions are somewhat of a coin toss and can break like they’re made of glass if you beat on them too hard so don’t push it too far without a warranty to back you up lol.

Edit: not every transmission of the ND1/2 are bad but there’s definitely enough cases to warrant caution

Transmission slipping its not noticeable at first for few months. It happened to my 18 qx60. I’ve gone to transmission mechanic and they drove and diagnosed the car 4 times with 4 different tools and there are 0 codes coming up.whenever i drive now i cannot accelerate fast when car engine is cold. It takes around 1 hour to fully warm up the engine and the noise dampens down a little but its inevitable that i change trans or sell or trade. But car built quality is better than bmw and benz. Only problem that car has and had for past 6 years is trans other than that its a 10/10 car.

Some cars transmission makes whining noises my crown Vic does it and all of them make whining noises just the way they are made

my '23 nd2 does that, idk I actually like all the noises.

Helical gears still whine especially at high speeds, they are just far quieter, I assume it's noticeable in the MX5 since they made the actual case thinner to save weight, and you're sitting directly on top of the gearbox. Some examples will whine more than others because of acceptable "Transmission Error" Fresh fluid should quiet it down though.

if it’s a high pitched whine, that turns into scratching, it’s the transmission oil pump going out. listen carefully, this sounds like a boosted turbo

makes it sound like a turbo and i love mine when it did that but cant hear it now because of my exhaust
