When I was 6-years-old, I stepped on a broken Pepsi bottle. My parents didn't take me take me to the emergency room. Instead, Mom got her 9x9 casserole dish and some kerosene. Dad put my foot in the dish and filled it with kerosene. The kerosene thickened/clotted my blood and stopped the bleeding. I walked around on my heel for a day or so. No stitches.
