I have been in pain for the last 10 years of my life. I am only 33. When you said you were walking pain free I started to cry. I am done with this pain. I am ready for surgery. I have an 8 month old and a 2 1/2 y/o and I want to be able to play with them and pick them up without pain.

I have just had microdiscectomy on my l5 disc and s1 nerve root. I have had severe pain/numbness/ tingling sensations down the whole of my left leg and left foot for the past 9 months. When i woke up from the anaesthetic, i was able to walk around the ward absolutely pain free. I have minor pain at the incision site. It is going to be a tough next few month's with regards to recovery etc, but i have read so many posts and threads on this operation. some negative and some positive. I was completely on the fence with it but i think it comes down to individual themselves, and for me it has been worth it so far, yes it is early days but before surgery i couldnt sit, walk, sleep, lay down. The pain was excruciating. The truth is, once you have a back injury, you always have a back injury. But you can learn to manage it. Tell your kids to treat there spine like a piece glass. But in my opinion, wether this operation is beneficial and worth doing, is COMPLETELY down to the individual.

Hi! I'm from the Philippines. I'm 3 weeks post-op. I was in severe pain for a long time before I decided to get surgery. Best decision I've ever made. I was on so many pain meds for a long time, fentanyl and oral morphine included. I got surgery at 7am and I was standing up and walking at 3pm. I went home the following day. Everything's good so far. Thanks for the video! This was me exactly haha cool!

I am 1 day post surgery... back is very tight and i feel like i want to twist and crack it myself, obviuosly wont do that, but just wanted to describe the feeling. Injured it 8 months ago, went through 2 segments of pt and 2 spine injections without any long term solution. Pain would just come back after the injections wore off with a shorter duration of effectivity from the second one. Surgery was really a last option for me but it gets to the point where you have tried everything. The fact is that my quality of life was awful... constant sciatica in my left leg, couldnt bend down at all or pick anything up, sleep was for only 4 hours at a time. Was put on oxycodone for the past 3 months to deal with the pain, but for those that have nerve pain, its amazing how little even powerful opiods do to ease the pain....

After waking up from surgery i have very little to no leg and butt pain on my left side. I couldnt be happier at the moment. Will have to see how things progress during recovery. But very hopeful.

I wish I saw this video prior my surgery. I always had some back issues. Used to get flare ups but I managed it. I was in pain for more than 6 months. Start loosing strength in my right leg. I had very bad sciatica. Then pain in my buttock, hamstring, calf and ankle. And within a week prior the operation I start had numbness in my right foot. It was so bad that I feel down the last 2 steps and broke 2 toes. Surgery had to be postponed a week due to the doctor getting sick. On the day of the surgery I had to go for a heart sonar, ECG and chest xray, I was wheeled to teater. When I wake up, I was pain free! I was crying (I will blame it on the anesthesia). I had some pins and needles in both legs that freaked me out but due to the nerve damage prior, I was told it will get better - and it did. In hospital rehab was tough. Getting out of bed at first was difficult. I'm 1 week post surgery and I haven't taken ANY pain meds. It is life changing!

I’m one week post op and like you, my after surgery pain was less than my regular daily pain. I am taking 500mg Tylenol, muscle relaxers and steroids. I have high hopes and my constant right leg cramps have stopped since surgery. I have limited energy, I encourage anyone having this surgery to create an environment where you can rest when you need to. Grabber and Raised toilet seat is a must, without it the pain getting down and up is intense.

I am from the USA, had my microdiscectomy L5S1 surgery 5 days ago after a 5 months of suffering from sharp pain. Walking from day one. Still have some nerve pain, but hope it will eventually go away as it heals. Do not have stitches over the incision, the tissue was glued.

Does anyone also experience S1 pain after the procedure? Please share!!

My disc herniation is at L5S1 also and my microdiscectomy is in 10 days; I'm told by someone who had the surgery that I'll need to get a bedpan because of the no movement rule. Did you have to use one?
