Dr. Shim explains what happens with a lumbar discectomy.

The video shows how Lumbar Discectomy surgery is done for herniated discs. The technique is the Microdiscectomy procedure which is the norm.

In general, patients that have lumbar discectomy surgery usually fall into two categories. The blog gives an overview of those two categories and the video focuses on the surgery itself.

Thanks! Just watching gives me a little relief! Wish me luck! Waiting for my lawyer from car accident to release money for this. Or give the letter that the surgeon will get paid afterwards. I was already suffering from fibromyalgia, sacroiliac aches and pains, spondylosis and to top it with a couple of herniated and bulging discs. All this gave me chronic fatigue. So I’m always half alert. Nobody knows but me to the extent of what I go through daily. Lots of mental fighting within myself. Oh, forgot to include ADHD. So it’s hard to be organized, write things down or I do then forget where I placed my papers. All this and maintaining a house of high achievers (my kids) and a job. Let me, lastly include, my husband is a hoarder. Ugh, the dogs! If I give them away who knows if they’ll forgive me. Other than all of this, I’m a happy and blessed person. I teach confirmation to teens and enjoy giving teens advice to better themselves. Though, everything I do is mediocre until I take care of this insane pain. Wish me luck and prayers that I get through this mess!

I literally had this surgery yesterday. No pain afterwards; just some discomfort.
Looking forward to a better quality of life.

I’m getting this tomorrow. If you want to follow my recovery and rehab I’ll be posting videos on my account. All the best to anyone undergoing this surgery!

Thanks for this. I had a medial facetectomy 5 days ago and so far so good. It was very interesting to see the surgical techniques

I notice you didn't mention leg weakness or a herniation's effect on motor nerves as a reason to have surgery. Wouldn't that also justify surgery? And at what point does pursuing conservative treatment become ill-advised because a delay in having surgery may lead to permanent nerve damage?

Just got this surgery, I feel immediate relief of pain and numbness of the leg. But, please don't go into this thinking it's painless or very little pain. It is extremely painful for the first 2 days I was unable to move. Third day and multiple pain killers i have enough strength to use the bathroom #2. This is the worst of it all

I am 15 year old(going to be 16 year old soon) and i am suffering from disc bulge for 1 year. Physiotherapy, medicines, physical therapy doesn't relieve pain. I do not have leg numbness. The pain is in hip when i sit on hard surface for too long. Also when sciatic nerve is stretched, sharp pain comes in hip and down the leg(between (behind knee). According to MRI, i have disc bulge in L4-L5. Doctor is saying to have surgery and i think its good time because its been 1 year and i am fed up. Doctor is still discussing becauss i am rare case(disc bulge for 1 year in young age). Please tell your thoughts about having surgery for me is good or bad.
