EXPAND FOR LINKS:
This is how I have been able to study Japanese at home without immediately feeling lost. I know how it feels to want to start something, but not knowing where to begin. This simple at-home study routine, with consistency, will allow you to start learning and retaining Japanese (or any other language for that matter).

Edit: This is only one method for learning Japanese. It was intended for someone who has no direction and needed a simple plan to get started. There are many other ways to study a language, like immersion, for example. Stay tuned on Roads Less Traveled where I will dive into more of these methods in future videos. Thank you for watching!

I remember when I was 8 or 7 I tried to study Japanese because it’s my fav language and I didn’t learn the alphabet first I learned the words first

Unless you live in Japan, you'll almost always be interacting with Japanese people over the internet so learning how to type Japanese on a smartphone and computer is an important part of learning the language in the modern day. So as you learn hiragana, katana, and especially Kanji, make sure to practice typing it so you can communicate with native speakers through text as well as speaking.

I can't recommend the app Memrise enough. Literally taught me everything I know with little effort, obviously all i had were notes

I did this and it helps so much with learning Japanese! I would also recommend using mnemonics to learn kanji and kana, it’s another really effective way to go about this. getting native input is also really important for pronunciation and will help a lot in everyday life so that you can better communicate with people. Great video!

I would recommend the Japanese from zero textbook if you are a slow Lerner cause the genki is for people that learn faster and if you are a complete beginner it will be hard for you and overwhelming

I find Hirigana and Katakana surprisingly easy.
Edit: It's been a year, please stop replying to this. Some of you guys still get heated about this, but I haven't even been trying to learn japanese recently.

Here’s how I learned how to read hiragana and katakana: I watched some random videos teaching the letters and reading YT comments . I would write the right characters and write them during boring classes.
It’s not ideal but it worked for me

I’m almost through the first section in Busuu! My tip is get real kana for practice with kana drills. It has improved my speed. Oh and kanji garden. ありがとうございます!

As someone who is studying Japanese as well as having a friend that is I highly recommend a Japanese teacher through Verbling especially one who is actually from Japan because they tend to know what right and wrong Japanese is and what people say there. Besides that I agree with the video and think textbooks are a great help when I was a child learning english (my first language) my mom taught me it through textbooks and little activities in the textbook. A couple years later and i'm fluent in english partially because I live in a place were english is spoken but also just because of those workbooks and my mom who speaks fluent english!

Thank you for the quizlet tip! I’ve handmade a bunch of flashcards for myself but they become inconvenient to use on the go.

One thing for memorizing vocab is not just input words in anki or other app, input phrases with that word, you learn a lot more this way (also make the cards so the english translations appear first and you have to think what's the meaning in Japanese)
