I remember when I first heard this in the theaters. That's the only time I ever sat through the credits to hear a masterpiece.

For those who don't know, this version of the lonely mountain was purely made because the one sang by the dwarves was too slow and didn't fit the credits. Peter Jackson and Philippa Boyens thought the same and had to find a way to implement the lonely mountain. Philippa than called Neil Finn and he agreed on helping out and so he worked on a new version and so this tune was born.

Clearly the best version of this song, and the best theme song for any Tolkien based movie since May It Be.

For me this is the best songs of all the middleearth movies. It fits perfectly. Listening to it, it reminds me not only of the Misty Mountains and the Hobbit, but also of home, feeling safe, and come home after a longer time. This song is the reason why I like the story of the Hobbit more than the one from LOTR (I'm not talking about the books/films, just the story behind it): LOTR is very epic and big and about saving the world, while the Hobbit is smaller, but with bigger feelings: it's technically nothing more than some dwarfs who want to get their home back, because they miss it so much, and all these feelings are in this song...

The beginning instrumental of this is amazing. It makes me wonder why there are no instrumentals like this used in all of the medieval style games that are out today. That was one thing I always loved about an old game, Ultima Online, was the theme "Stones." Although it was probably 15 years ago-- I still remember the enjoyment I felt every single time hearing that song.
