Ubuntu Mate 21.04 on the Raspberry Pi 4 - Installation & Overview!

Ubuntu Mate 21.04 is another flavor on Ubuntu that uses the Mate desktop environment. It's more lightweight and suitable for the Raspberry Pi 4! With the new release of Ubuntu 21.04, there are also some new changes to Ubuntu Mate 21.04! This guide goes over installing it, and then an overview of the operating system.

Generally Ubuntu distro's doesn't have much screen tearing as compared to raspberry pi os because compositor is disabled by default and also the window system is also different

I tried Kubuntu but on first boot it was too slow(obviously) and after a restart it won't boot :(
It was stuck on a screen

i was surprised how well regular ubuntu runs on my pi4, but i hate the GNOME 3 DE so i quickly installed Unity DE "sudo apt install ubuntu-unity-desktop" and it's even better. Ubuntu Unity distro also have a dedicated Rpi release, and runs great as well, and has a bit more modern polish out of the box.

Hey there, I'm on mate 21.04. it's quite good but I have no way to enable GPU acceleration on Firefox or chromium. (It works in VLC) did you try this? And thanks for the video, it's cool to have an honest review 🙃

I don’t get mate after following your guide.. I only get the blue screen desktop without any wallpaper or anything.. what am I doing wrong ????

How would you overclock on this OS? Also is there an app to monitor the overclock like commander pi?

I installed ubuntu server on pi 400 and then installed mate desktop but i have screen tearing issues and WiFi was also not working
