How do cast saws work?

Getting a cast off is such a huge relief. The cast saw feels really good after weeks of being trapped in a cast.

I’m an ED nurse. People having casts removed would panic when they saw the cast saw. They had the same worry. I always used to press it into my skin with it turned on so they could see it didn’t do any damage whatsoever. Never failed to win their trust

I had a cast taken off ~25yrs ago and still have a scar from it. I remember being told it wouldn't cut me, and when they got to my wrist I jerked my arm away three separate times saying it hurt. Turned out while it might not cut, it can definitely get hot enough to just straight burn through your skin.

That is what I was told at my doctors office when I broke my arm, but they didn’t put enough of the padding material so the saw burned my skin 3 times on my arm so I don’t trust the fabric at all haha…

Because they're inefficient, and if made in workshop environments, the increasingly complex mechanism needed to do so with a large saw is impractical and not long lived.

The issue in medicine was never defeating the ailment. Death does it either way!
This issue was keeping the patient alive and minimize collateral damage.

You have put my mind at ease. My sister broke her arm when I was a teenager, and from then until just now the idea of sawing off a cast has really set me on edge. Not that I didn't trust the doctor/nurse to do it correctly, just that I thought there was WAY more danger involved. Thank you for clearing my mind of this latent paranoia.

When I got my cast off, the nurse held the cast saw on her hand for a few seconds to show me it wouldn't hurt before she ever came near me with it. Really appreciated that!
