The Achaemenid period (550–330 BCE) is rightly seen as one of the most formative periods in Judaism. It is the period in which large portions of the Bible were edited and redacted and others were authored―yet no dedicated interdisciplinary study has been undertaken to present a consistent picture of this decisive time period.

This book is dedicated to the study of the touchpoints between Yahwistic communities throughout the Achaemenid empire and the Iranian attributes of the empire that ruled over them for about two centuries. Its approach is fundamentally interdisciplinary. It brings together scholars of Achaemenid history, literature and religion, Iranian linguistics, historians of the Ancient Near East, archeologists, biblical scholars and Semiticists. The goal is to better understand the interchange of ideas, expressions and concepts as well as the experience of historical events between Yahwists and the empire that ruled over them for over two centuries. The book will open up a holisitic perspective on this important era to scholars of a wide variety of fields in the study of Judaism in the Ancient Near East.

*Let's briefly run through the 'ten plagues':*

1. First the rivers are turned to blood, all the fish die and the waters stink. No one has any water to drink. This lasted for seven days and would have resulted in mass deaths due to dehydration. Amongst the first to die would have been the children. *The author doesn't think to explain how the Hebrews were saved from this. No record of it was made anywhere in any Egyptian records.* Exodus 7:17-25.

2. This is followed by a plague of frogs which had somehow survived the rivers of blood that had killed all the fish. A mere inconvenience, nothing more, and a big stink when they all died, *but no record anywhere.* Exodus 8:2-13.

3. Next we have the plague of lice about which very little is said and *of course no record was made.* To a people who would have been accustomed to lice this would probably have been nothing remarkable. Exodus 8:16-18.

4. Then the flies. Apart from the land being 'corrupted', whatever that means, there don't appear to have been any ill effects from this and they disappear as quickly as they came a few days later. *Nothing worth recording there, obviously.* Exodus 8:21-31.

5. Now the author seems to begin to lose the plot and describes a 'grievous murrain' *which kills all the Egyptians' cattle, horses, camels and sheep. They all died* - ***hold that thought.*** *No Egyptian historian or keeper of official records deems it worthy of mention.* Exodus 9:3-6.

6. Next come the boils which afflict everyone and everything, *including all the livestock* ***even though they had been killed by the 'grievous murrain' a few days earlier, *** *apparently, and yet no-one thought to write anything down anywhere.* Of course, anyone who understood anything about microorganisms and the aeteology of boils would have described this as an infestation with Staphylococcus - the signs of faecal contamination - but the author was obviously unaware of these. Maybe he was just in too much of a muddle by now to care. Exodus 9:8-11.

7. Now it's hailstones so bad that every plant, every tree, every servant (for servant read slave) ***and even the livestock (that our story-teller has forgotten already that he killed off in the fifth plague before given them boils in the sixth) were harmed.*** It looks like our story-teller has learned from his earlier silly mistake with killing all the livestock too soon then having to resurrect them later. He mentions that some plants survive. Do I smell stinking fish again? *The greatest hail storm in all Egyptian history, apparently, but not worthy of being recorded.* Exodus 9:18-25.

8. It's the turn of the locusts and it's suddenly obvious why some plants had to survive. *How could the locusts turn Egypt into a barren desert if the hail storm had done it earlier? Good thinking there. Shame about the earlier boob! Mysteriously, no Egyptian scribe appears to notice any of this or the inevitable famine and mass starvation which would have ensued.* Exodus 10:4-15.

9. And for the penultimate trick, it's going to be dark for three days. *No one makes a record of this, obviously.* Exodus 10:21-23.

10. The last 'plague' is not so much a plague as a ritual genocide. *Here our tale takes a nasty turn and the true character of the Hebrew god is revealed in all its glory - a petty, vindictive, homicidal psychopath who has not yet acquired the omniscience he will be granted later.* He kills every firstborn Egyptian in a single night, ***including the firstborn of all the cattle that died in the fifth plague.*** *For some reason he needs the Hebrews to leave a secret sign so he doesn't kill them too. Weirdly, he can't tell his own chosen people from ordinary Egyptians and doesn't even know where they live.* And he had been leading up to this, apparently, because after every plague he 'hardens the heart' of Pharaoh so that he wouldn't let the Hebrews go. He had actually been planning this genocide all along just to impress people with his powers. *And still no-one thought even this mass killing in a single night worth making a note of in any Egyptian records.* Exodus 12:1-30.

And then, of course, Pharaoh could muster up 600 horses to pull the chariots ***from amongst all the dead livestock from the 5th plague*** (Exodus 14:7).

If Biblical stories were fictional, moses never really existed, then, islamic texts that contains similar stories, are also fictional.

Exodus is used today to do horrible things to the people living in Israel, and for that, its serious things for us in these times, lies upon lies, calling them myths is not harsh enough.

I think it might be reasonable to assume that most Christians have never read the bible.

What Christians believe to be the Word of God is really the word of man.

The fact that so many people still believe the Bible is historically accurate, rather than a compilation of various ancient sources that have been translated and retranslated over the millennia that have obvious biases and errors is really sad
Christians in the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries believed when they encountered new people, they would find they are also Christians, because God's word is universal, and they were very shocked to find time after time that there was no other civilization that worshipped the god of the Bible

Five decades alive as I am, four of them spent listing the pros and cons of monism. Half a decade of spiritual exploration and it's all made a very confident pantheist of me. Spare me the exceptionalism and judgement that accompanies the former. I'd rather die than sing to that jealous, infanticidal, genocidal abomination.

I was gob smacked when I heard this, especially when I learned that historians have agreed since the early 1900's that Moses never existed. Is it just us Catholic educated people who are ignorant of the Moses myth, or is our whole country still overwhelmed by such Christian propaganda?

The exodus never happened either, not a single pottery shard has been found

I have believed this withought EVIDENCE for 20 years, the scribes, did their Job well, and created Brother's Very Grim stories, Long Live Asherah.

Both the Talmud and Exodus describe Moses as having horns like a sheep growing out of his head in typical mythical style. You can even google a picture of Micheal Angelo's Moses statue commissioned by the Vatican, that show Moses with sheep horns in true mythical style.
The Jews are not happy thinking Moses was a myth, since they claim he wrote 5 of their religious scriptures.... even though they were written only ever in Hebrew and written Hebew was only invented back in 10 BCE.... yet the claim is Moses lived some 1000BCE.. Seems lies is not restricted to just the christians!

It's also common for ancient myths to be copied or passed down. An ancient story of the tale of Sargon of Akkad, entails a baby is placed in a basket and floated down a river, later to be found and raised by a royal family.

Fabricated is too harsh a word.

All ancient cultures simply had little or no information about their past to go by, but humans have always been great storytellers. So the purpose of these oral histories was not to deceive people living 2, 000-3, 000 years later, but to unite their listeners into a cohesive group forming a culture unique from their neighbors.

And of course, the author of the fairy tale would consider his own race the chosen people for good measure!

Thank you for acknowledging that the Hebrew Masoretic is not original and that the Ancient Hebrew language was different! Yes, adding vowel markings did change the meaning of words. 👏🏽 Bravo for being honest about it!

Pretty sure The Torah does say that Hebrews can own & sell other hebrews. They just are not to be treated like non Hebrew slaves.

I really like Gad Barnea. Reminds me of Gmirkin, in terms of his late dating of the Bible, but seems more willing to acknowledge Persian influence. Imo the weakest aspect of Gmirkin’s work is his insistence on attributing proto monotheism entirely to Plato and not further exploring the Zoroastrian connection.

Super interesting. But no mention of the Hebrews coming out of the Canaanite population, and their early use of the Canaanite god El, and mention of El's consort Asherah. Is it just an earlier period he doesn't cover?

Anykne who wants to know already knows. Jews say 'ancient Hebrew: was a dialect of the Phoenician language and that wasn't around i til about 900 bce. 'Jews' who spoke Hebrew weren't around when they say Moses lived. But, don't knock the importance of legends amd myths -- they build community amd we all need it. None of them are 'true', they just embody values and a sense of lofe and responsibilities we agree with.
