Well to be specific Kanan and his crew didn't lead up to the creation of the rebels, but one of the groups who've influenced it's creation. Also for comic book suggestion (and if you didn't knew) people need to pick up Star Wars Kanan which is pretty interesting backstory for the former padawan.
