Buy cheap the first time but buy the biggest set you can find. When things break or wear out, replace with the high end version.

You're left with the tools you use the most being the best, but if you need something for a job you rarely do, chances are you'll have it.

Best bit is you'll spend far less in the long run

Pretty solid list. Spoke key is a must as is Chain whip/cassette removal tool are a must. Can’t replace most rear spokes without pulling the cassette. Also you can remove your dork disk while you’re at it.

The best Park Tool model was left out on the pitch - the Ji Sung Park Tool - tool had 3 lungs and made light work coming off the bench

A good quality multitool such as the Topeak Hexus X is probably the first tool to get as it will do 80% of the jobs on your bike. Then follow it up with whatever is needed for maintenance tasks as they come up. Buy good tools if you think you will use them frequently, otherwise get something mid priced for occasional use. Avoid cheap tools that may end up harming your bike and costing you more than you saved.

I agree, buy quality tools, you have them for life. They work better, built better and last sooo much longer.

I have more tools than most bike shops, my favorites are my Bicycle Reseach nipple driver from 1980, Branson ultrasonic rig and DT Tensio 2.
I would add those to a wish list. 👍🏻

GMBN Tool Club! 😁 This could be a cross discipline GCN channel! I'd sign up! 😁👍 I'm sure I go out to break my bikes, subconsciously, just so I can fix them! Can't beat a day on the tools with the bike hooked up to the stand! Great film Owen, I'm always amazed just how many seasoned riders, regardless of type of bike don't fix their own bikes! I couldn't imagine having someone else tighten the nuts and bolts on my bike before I go flying down a hill! My favourite tool? FSA threaded Bottom bracket removal tool(s)!!!

Owen, marvellous mate. I'd add a set of quick-link chain pliers (or is that just roadies?) They say bikes are n+1, for tools n+??

little secret 'good tools are the cheaper ones in the long run. Sometimes even in the short term. Park is a great source as well as others brands including some that aren't bike specific. MY favorite tool is the right tool another words the one that made for job and not just something your using to get by!
