How to Remotely Control Your Computer Using Any Device (access your desktop from anywhere)

Remotely control your computer with any laptop, tablet or phone using Google Chrome Remote Desktop.
I’m an architecture student. I recently started an internship, which is great. But before I started, they asked if I could bring in my laptop to work on.
This would be fine if I had a good laptop with all the software I need, and that can actually run all that software, but I don’t. That’s what my home desktop is for.
I have a really powerful desktop at home but my laptop, is, well, a piece of shit. I can take notes off of it and that’s about it.

I wanted to use my desktop, but without carrying it with me on the back of my bike to work each day.

As a solution, I’ve been remotely connecting to my desktop from the office using my shitty old laptop that can’t even handle opening a new document in photoshop.
How? Using google chrome’s remote desktop app.

The process is incredibly simple to set up and use. It’s free and is an absolute game changer.

The way it works is that you use your laptop, tablet or phone as a monitor to control your desktop at home. Your secondary device (laptop, tablet or phone) acts as a remote control that controls your desktop at home. It takes advantage of your desktop’s hardware without having to physically have a desktop with you.
There’s now no need to upgrade to a fancy, high-spec laptop. All you need is a second hand $150 laptop like the one I have that can remotely connect to your computer at home. I do this for work, my internships and when at campus for university.
There’s no more working across different drives on different computers, getting home and having to copy all my new files over. There’s no need for cloud storage. I just remotely connect to my computer at home and work from those drives.

How about lag?
The connection is based off your Wi-Fi connection. If you have a slow or broken internet connection, you will experience some delay in your remote connection to your desktop. However, if you have both your desktop and laptop connected to a stable Wi-Fi, you won’t experience any lag whatsoever.

In this guide, you’ll learn how to remotely control your computer with any device for free using Google Chrome Remote Desktop.

Thanks! I'm 54 years old and I love technology! What's better is young smart people like you show me how to maximize it! You saved me at least 1400 bucks. I was getting ready to buy a new laptop!
Thanks again!

this is the kind of tutorial we need on youtube, not those kids that last 20 minutes to just make the tutorial in 20 seconds

Super helpful! Doing rather lengthy 3D renders and it’d be nice to check on them from work to make sure there’s no errors and my 20 hour render doesn’t turn into a 40 hour render.

Dude this is so cool. I was trying to figure out a way to use my golf simulator in the garage without having to get a laptop or something else and this is SOOOO clutch. Thank you so much.

As someone in the navy who has been 2, 000 miles from home for the last 5 months, I wish I found out about this sooner!

I'm starting my second year with all virtual classes, in the end of last year I bought my desktop, before I was using a 14 years old dell, core duo, 2gb of RAM and no graphics... you can imagine the struggle... in a hope of some day getting back to uni in person this tip will completely save my life, although I may as well try it with my phone that is much more powerful than that old laptop in my drawer

I forgot this existed. Thanks for the reminder, great tutorial. One tip: maybe make the pc/desktop wake-on-lan. So it doesn't have to be on all day.

Gonna try this so I can watch all my spectrum channels when I’m traveling for work! Since I’m not on my home network it limits the channels I watch so I’m hoping this is a work around that! I will update this when I get home and try 🙌🏻

This is also handy for live concert mixing, I can have my laptop in the crowd and listen to what the crowd hears, while my desktop with all it's ADAT racks and Cubase with all my low-latency pluggins is mixing the band - no long fiber optic cables, no 100 foot XLR runs. Just a laptop in the crowd.

Thanks for the video Kyle. Maybe pick up a used laptop some where to end your frustration. Also try speeding it up a bit so the video isn't so long.
