camavinga had so many responsibilities this game and he took care of them well. he participated defensively and offensively, neutralized the threat of bernardo and created multiple chances for vini & benzema, my motm

City had more of possession but it felt like they were walking over eggshells. One mistake and the next moment vinicius/benzema are about to receive between the lines with acres to run into.

I said it last week, Pep CHOSE not to go all out and attack.
His game plan was to keep it tight and to NOT lose the game, so that he could finish the tie back at the Etihad.
It’s why he made 0 changes, because he was happy with how the game was panning out and didn’t want to disrupt it.

It’s EXACTLY what he did with Leipzig, people were calling for attacking changes but he made zero subs.
His strategy was to keep it tight and then attack them at home… we saw what happened there.
Same with Madrid tonight.
Pep is one of the greatest ever coaches! No debate!!!

This was Real Madrid showcasing the ultimate 4-3-3 defense formation. They were so disciplined.

Reading the game by Kroos was almost perfect. He amazingly secured Cama and the left side which let Vini stand very high.
✅2 tackles
✅5 interceptions
⛔0 was dribbled
Crucial player, the age doesn't matter for him.

Once again great content.
A couple of things stood out to me during this game.
1. Between all those Clasicos Madrid have played, Ancelotti has had a lot of practice on how to deal with a box midfield. Crucially for Real, City's box midfield depends on a CB pushing up into midfield as opposed to Barca's which depends on a Winger tucking into midfield. The former is more tricky for Madrid to deal with because of the 1v1s that Barca would force Carvajal into and the half space overload it would create and this would be unavoidable regardless of pressing structure because it would force either Militao to come high leaving behind spaces for a midfield runner like De Jong to exploit, or Valverde/Rodrygo would have to drop back and act as a wingback which in turn allowed Barca's elite deep-lying playmakers have more time on the ball. Preventing Stones from pushing up and joining the midfield however provided less headaches for Madrid as it could largely be remedied with an intense high press as we saw.
2. City missed a trick by not playing long and using Edersons brilliant long passing to target the space behind Carvajal. All in all, City chose to target the wrong Madrid fullback. Carvajal, like I explained from how Barca played, is usually the guy you want to target. This is especially the case when Madrid are playing with such a high press. Long balls aimed at Haaland in the left half space or Grealish out wide (who should comfortably beat Carvajal in any kind of duel) would have forced Madrid's midfield to back peddle a bit so that Valverde could help cover, that in turn would have forced Rodrygo to defend more, giving City more playing options with Akanji, and easier facilitating Stones movement into midfield. In this regard I suppose that the lack of a defensively solid attacking fullback really limited City as I feel that if they had a player like Alphonso Davies or Alejandro Balde that would have added more to their ability to beat Madrid's press and attack Carvajal.
Overall, an interesting tactical battle, I wonder how Pep will overthink the second leg 😂

"How Ancelotti shutdown the city build up"

Thst just goes to show how much respect he has for Peps team and how far this city team has come in terms of tactics. Other years that goal would've killed their hope but they played liks they were the ones leading. Game was a great watch can't wait for the return leg .

Great analysis as always too🎉

This makes me just that much more excited to see how both sides will tactically prepare for the second leg. It'll be a good one...

A Brazilian scored on a Brazilian and a Belgian scored on a Belgian

Madrid can so easily adjust to a game.. I think that's one of their strengths together with being in really good shape

Shut down? City managed to get a draw in the Bernabeu. Not sure who is shutting down who. Pep was clearly calculating in the first leg hence not making any substitution. People need to look at the result and the context of the situation.

The was more mentally taxing than physical. Every player was aware of their opponent's prowess and how lethal either opponent was at pouncing the other side's mistakes. I have never been at the edge of my sit as I was in this game when either side was pressing. I cannot imagine what was going on on the player's minds as the match progressed.

Last time I saw the KDB strike was in the Roberto Carlos era. What a goal!

I think Pep did not want to show all his cards in this 1st leg. He was probably looking for either a draw or a small margin win at the Bernabeu. Next week at the Etihad, I believe we will be seeing a more aggressive and fluid City side.
Also, I think Pep has learned from his earlier CL exits with City. Pep has learned that the team that plays the best football doesn't always win. Last year, City dominated Madrid in both legs and created so many chances especially in that 1st leg but City wasted their chances (Mahrez and Foden). City could have easily scored 7 goals last year in that 1st leg. As a result, we are seeing Pep become more pragmatic and instead of blowing away opponents, he is looking to be more defensive solid and okay with getting a slender win as long as it means that City win the tie.

I really loved the way how Modric and Kroos dropped deeper and helped the defensive line as well as build-up play.

So, City are the ones being stopped here? I thought real madrid were the kings, so if anything, City eluded death at the Bernabeu
