Something I just realized after a year, that has a much darker reality. The fact that you can use the end crystals to revive the dragon means that Jean could endlessly kill her. Which could mean Jean is being killed for her hide to make more Elytra, but as we see when we kill her there is no body to harvest. This has one of two situations, either Jean was revived and killed so many times she now doesn't have a body to harvest. Or the builders built this system killed her, revived her then killed her again only to find that she no longer had a body to harvest. So they gave up leaving Jean to suffer eternal life. But either came to study her later, or as Endermen not understanding why, then remembering why they came to Jean when she accidentally hits them.

I'm not so sure...

Looking at the dragon, it seems a bit odd. When the dragon dies, it doesn't just fall over like other mobs, it explodes, crumbling to pieces. It also creates a portal to the islands as it dies. And the sound it makes, it sounds like a machine crumbling, ending off with a powering down noise. Also, the dragon heads can be powered by redstone. And while you can't hatch the egg, you can respawn the dragon by using end crystals. If you can just make new dragons, why are you worried about their extinction?

I propose that the dragon was in fact artificial, created by the builders as a sort of guard dog, to prevent anyone, or anything, from following them into the end. That's why every end portal goes straight to the center island, as opposed to nether portals, which go to a relative spot between the dimensions.

Yo Matt, quick question: why can you resummon the Enderdragon? Do you think the builders used magic or something to keep the dragon alive? maybe as a last resort kinda scenario?

Theory: Jean was left alive with healing towers to kill the wither if it ever entered. She probably even did, the problem after the fact was that they had given her several nigh-indestructable healing towers and a seething hatred and justifiable motivation to kill them. They certainly didn't have the amount or quality of weapons to fight her, and any bridges they built were destroyed after they got away from the entry island or destroyed in her battle.

11:27 "Long ago, all the Ender Dragons lived together in harmony, but everything changed when the Ancient Builders attacked. Only Jean, master of the End could kill the Ancient Builders, but when the End needed her the most, she was killed by some random Steve."

I actually think the Elytras are made from Phantoms, the mob that appears if you dont sleep 3 nights in a row. Not only do their wings look very similar, but you literally use phantom membranes, the items they drop, to repair elytras in an anvil.

note : In one of the April fools updates the contents inside chests of end ships are replaced with books labelled "Orders" with tasks such as destroy, deliver, repair etc.

Another reason why the ancient civilization kills the ender dragons could be for the fact that they dropped a massive amount of Exps, which is useful for their enchantings, which is why you often find enchanted armors and tools in end ships and end cities

Jean is a trophy, I feel like they wanted to show their dominance over that species.

Could the Endermen be the ancient Builder's last resort at re-introducing an apex predator into the ecosystem, literally using themselves as sacrifice and becoming monsters while the rest tried leaving the end to a yet to be seen expansion?

Matpat: “here’s a heartbreaking story of a poor lonely tormented creature persecuted to the ends of the earth and waiting for the sweet release of death.”
Also Matpat: “so anyway, BACKPACKS!”

About that opening line: "bees shouldn't be able to fly" is only true if you're using the laws of *fixed-wing* aviation. Bees (and presumably dragons) use sheer brute force to overcome gravity and drag.
