most excel I see won't allow for read only changes from Properties. I was expecting something more from an expert.

Nice, worked! 
Tried to go through options when in Save As mode, box was already unticked. 
Then two finger click (Mac) and click Get info, down the bottom click Share&Pemisions and change to Read and Write ALL.
