How does the AF compare to the previous models in terms of confidence when pulling from one subject to another? I ask as they've switched from hybrid PDAF + CDAF to contrast-based AF alone. Does it overshoot or wobble when the subject distance changes, like in a product showcase? Thanks!

I honestly think that whoever decides to upgrade from a Smart Phone to a Point and shoot camera as the sony will definitely pick the ZV-1 over the ZV-1F . Even if it is cheaper I doubt it will be an appeal for many people in 2022/2023. It is already outdated and it doesn't offer enough, Sony should've worked on improving the zv-1 not limiting it .

I'm still easing into what my iPhone 14 Pro is capable of...but after watching you guys today, I finally tried the fraont facing cam in Cinematic mode and it just blew my mind. I've got damn near 20 cameras in my office ranging from a lowly Insta360 Go 2, all the way up to my ZV-1, G9, S5...and what you can do with just a phone, I just can't wrap my head around it. A true full-frame camera will always be better, but for that one thing that fits in your pocket...

...just wow.

I think one of the biggest niches for this camera is people who don't want to use or can't use their phone for vlogging. If you need to make sure your phone has battery for maps and plane tickets, this makes sense.

This is easily the worst camera Sony have released in a long time. You can’t use it handheld without it becoming unusable and they’ve removed their terrific autofocus system to give it contrast only.

If you are saving $250 getting this over the Z-V1 then my suggestion is save up that extra money and just buy a grip that lets you hold it out a bit further.

This is such a wasted opportunity.

In these days on Amazon there was the Sony ZV-E10 at 699€. With 200€ there is a huge difference.
In my opinion is better to keep the smartphone and not waste 500€ on this new ZV-1F. And if you want to level up just try the ZV-E10 with 200€ more.
Anyway great review as always 😁

This is an excellent video. I'm not a camera guru, I ran my channel off Samsung phones until I got the Sony ZV-1. I just bought a 2nd ZV-1 and was debating on getting this as a 3rd camera for my setup.

Also, I have recently been watching Gerald's funnier videos, it's fascinating to see him go back to pure camera nerd stuff.

I have the ZV-1 and the Iphone 13 pro max as well as the Sony Xperia 5IV plus the Fujifilm Xt-30ii with the 35mm 1.4 lens. I can definately say that the real dedicated cameras like ZV-1 are much better in video quality compared to the smartphones mentioned. The APS-C sensored Fuji gives even better video quality then the Sony ZV-1 but the ZV-1 makes really good vides with a very nice AF. The internal stabilizer is not really good but the ZV-1 creates a Bokeh in video footage and the smartphones can hardly do that which is a huge difference. You can create a little bokeh in the iphone with the Tele Lens buts its minor. To the ZV-1F, i would not want to loose the zoom lens because sometimes i do amazon reviews and i need to zoom in on the table while the camera is on a tripod. Like i mentioned the stabilizer of the ZV-1 was not really good, so the ZV-1F is even worse. The Tripod mount Problem of the ZV-1 blocking the battery door can be solved with a half case from small rig for example.

There is a "skin-smoothing" feature in the pixel camera settings, but if that gets turned on automatically it's a huge issue...

Glad to see two of my favorite camera channels getting together. I’m happy with my ZV-1 with the wide angle lens adapter.

I have the ZV-1F- I honestly feel like the video and picture quality is better than my iPhone 14 pro, I love that it has wider lens, and I can create TikToks and reels with it so easily. I rarely use the back camera of my iPhone if I’m doing anything vlog style, because I like to look at myself and know that I’m in the frame while I’m filming, so with that, it’s much easier to film with it. Also taking selfies is also easier with it, again for the wider lens and better quality camera than the front iPhone camera.

I just think it has a very specific market

Thank y'all for this review! I'm a professional artist who does realism pencil/charcoal drawings and watercolor paintings. I'm currently looking at the Pixel 7 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro to use for talking head videos/time lapse videos of my artwork for YouTube. I'm still indecisive, but leaning towards the Pixel 7 Pro because of it's color accuracy. However, I plan to use the back camera of the phone. If y'all or anyone has any helpful input for me, I would greatly appreciate it!

In a studio situation it would be heavily adviced to use the back cameras of the phones. And you can use some TV or some screen to monitor your recording.

But on the iPhone 14 are you using the front-facing camera? It really looks like it. I use my watch for the screen and the rear camera.

all comparisons are made with front-facing why not rear cameras?

I think the off-centre 1/4 mount is because this camera is designed to be used with the shooting handle :)

Gerald… you NEED to do more phone camera reviews. These are the most honest reviews of those cameras I’ve ever seen, and they aren’t even the focus on the video.

iOS Moment App helps with alot of the frustrations with phone such as locking exposure, monitoring audio, setting gain, and picture profiles. Really wish iPhone would allow monitoring with AirPods but record with external mic as unplugging the mic to review a recorded segment gets SUPER annoying very fast.

Clearly cameras at $500 will disappear in a year or two as phones continue to improve. I expect the technical prowess of the Samsung S23 to be incredible, officially sounding the death knell of “budget” point and shoot cameras
