The slap noise was the chain.not badly stretched but still...got it changed without removing the sump.it is an x3 e83 3.0d m57n2

Bad news.This sound is from timing chain.I have changed the top and bottom chain, and my mechanic managed to do it without removing engine sump.But it was a 25 hour job.Parts cost me 500Euro, Labor here in Romania cost me 350 euro, because he is a friend.

It is unusual for m57 to have this. Mine 335d drove for 260.000km with 350hp/700nm without any problems and is still running.

Take oil filler cap off you’ll get a better idea of type of noise. Chain or lifters

Tappet Tick from the valve springs I use Halfords Hydraulic valve lifter fluid in mine.
